OAKLAND, Calif. –  Dwight Powell scored a game-high 27 points to lead the Stanford Cardinal to a 74-62 victory over USF Friday at Oracle Arena in the season-opener for both teams.

Freshman guard Avry Holmes came off the bench to score a team-high 17 points for USF while De'End Parker added 13 and Cole Dickerson 11 for the Dons.

Dickerson also pulled down a career-high 19 rebounds, as the Dons held a 45-29 advantage over the Cardinal on the boards.

USF managed to shoot just 39 percent from the field while Stanford shot 47.3 percent from the floor.

After both teams got off to a sluggish start, the Cardinal opened a 21-10 lead at the 9:03 mark of the first half. Holmes then ignited a 21-9 USF run that gave the Dons a 31-30 lead with 1:28 left in the first half. The freshman scored 11 of his 17 points during the stretch, including three 3-pointers.

The Cardinal led by one point at the half at 32-21 and outscored USF 16-5 after the break to open a 51-36 lead at the 12:32 mark. The Dons could get no closer than eight points the rest of the way, the last time at 69-61 with 3:18 left.

“We did some things well, but we still have a long way to go,” said USF head coach Rex Walters. “Avry Holmes really shot the ball well tonight and played without fear. Stanford's a good team with a lot of experience, and they really create some match-up problems.”

Cody Doolin added eight points and three assists for USF, while freshman center Tao Xu played 13 solid minutes off the bench and finished with seven points and four rebounds.

USF will return to action Tuesday night against Cal State-East Bay at War Memorial Gymnasium beginning at 7:00 p.m.
