NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The San Francisco women's basketball team fell victim to a deadly combination of hot shooting by Cal State Northridge and icy play by the Dons offense to fall 77-33 at the Matadome Wednesday night.
With the loss, the Dons move to an even 4-4 on the season, while Cal State Northridge improves to 5-3 on the year.
CSUN started 6-for-6 from 3-point range and built a 22-6 lead five minutes into the first half. The hot hand for the Matadors cooled, but not enough to help the Dons, as Cal State Northridge finished the period 9-of-14 from long distance.
USF didn't help itself by scoring a season-low 19 points in a half off of 23.3 percent shooting from the floor. The Dons missed all nine of its 3-point attempts in the first half. Despite crashing the offensive glass and pulling down nine rebounds, USF wasn't able to capitalize with zero second-chance points in the period.
The second half wasn't any nicer to the Dons, who finished the contest shooting 19.6 percent from the floor, with a 1-for-19 performance from 3-point range. Senior
Mel Khlok was the lone USF player to surpass double-digits, finishing with 13 points on 3-of-10 shooting from the field and a 6-of-9 night from the line.
Alicia Scafidi contributed seven points and eight rebounds and
Taj Winston also picked up eight boards for the Dons.
The Matadors blocked a season-high 12 shots, with nine swats in the second half. Sophomore Camille Mahlknecht was two blocks shy of a triple-double after posting 14 points and 13 rebounds in the victory. Cal State Northridge sunk 45.9 percent of its attempts with four double-digit scorers.
This loss signifies the largest margin of defeat for USF since falling 103-59 to Gonzaga on Feb. 19, 2011. A 30-41 loss to Loyola Marymount in 1987-88 stands as the last time the Dons scored under 33 points in a game.
This marks the conclusion of a three-game road trip. Up next, the Dons return home to host Notre Dame de Namur at War Memorial Gym Monday at 7 p.m.
