(San Francisco) – San Francisco men's basketball announces two quality additions to its roster as 6-5 guard Matt Glover (Orange, CA) and 6-6 guard De'End Parker have signed scholarship agreements as announced today by head coach
Rex Walters. Both Glover (Penn State) and Parker (UCLA) come to the Hilltop as Division I transfers from power conferences.
“We are really excited to welcome Matt Glover and De'End Parker to the University of San Francisco,” Walters said. “Obviously every day in practice and in games they have played at a very high level against some of the top teams in the nation. They have a good understanding of what it takes to compete and be successful at that level.”
With a proven reputation as a tough, physical player, Glover routinely guarded the top offensive threat while playing for the Nittany Lions. Walters expects that Glover will have success on both ends of the floor for the Dons.
“Watching him in junior college, he can shoot and score the basketball,” Walters said. “We recruited him hard and quite honestly couldn't get him to come to USF from Sheridan. We're just happy we got a second chance. We've liked recruiting guys from Sheridan because we feel that Steve Smiley does a good job coaching and developing players and prepares them for the next level.”
Parker, who left the Bruins last fall to attend to family matters in San Francisco has an opportunity to complete his college career in his hometown after starring at both Lincoln High School and City College of San Francisco.
“This was more for De'End than just coming back to the city,” Walters said. “It was about family and taking care of his family. Obviously we're benefiting greatly from that, but he's here because he wants to take care of people he really loves and cares about.”
Due to his family situation, the University of San Francisco, on behalf of Parker is petitioning the NCAA to allow him to be immediately eligible to play for the Dons as a junior for the 2012-13 campaign.
MATT GLOVER, 6-5, 210, JUNIOR GUARD (ORANGE, CA/PENN STATE)
Glover enjoyed a successful sophomore season at Penn State after transferring from Sheridan College. The Californian appeared in 32 games with 21 starting assignments – 12 coming in Big-10 play – in his lone season at College Station. Glover scored a career-high nine points against eventual NCAA Champion Kentucky (11/19/11) and set a pair of career-bests against Purdue with 11 rebounds and five assists. averaging 2.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 0.8 steals per game in 23.5 minutes per game.
Prior to joining the Nittany Lions, the combo guard averaged 11.8 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game playing mostly at the two-guard as a freshman at Sheridan. The Generals posted a 24-10 record in Region IX of the NJCAA. Glover made 70 percent of his free throws and 48 percent from the floor for a Sheridan team that posted 85 points per game.
Glover played point-guard at Tustin High School and averaged 18.6 points, 7.5 rebounds and 6.1 assists per game as a senior. A first-team all-league selection as well as All-Orange County second team and All-CIF second team, Glover led the Tillers to a 20-7 record in his final prep season. He posted 14 games with 20 or more points, including a 40-point, 13-rebound, 10-assist triple double performance vs. University High School.
COACH WALTERS ON GLOVER: “Matt is a tough physical guard that can play a couple different positions. He is not going to be physically overmatched at any time. He made good decisions while we were watching him at Sheridan. This is huge get for us.”
DE'END PARKER, 6-6, 215, JUNIOR GUARD (SAN FRANCISCO, CA/UCLA)
Parker joins the Dons after spending the 2011-12 season at UCLA and returns to the city to compete for USF and attend to his ailing mother. A standout at both Lincoln High School and the City College of San Francisco, Parker played in just two games for the Bruins, including a starting assignment against Middle Tennessee State. Parker scored seven points with two rebounds against the Blue Raiders.
Parker averaged 12.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game as a sophomore during his final season at CCSF. He shot 43.0 percent from 3-point range while guiding the Rams to their first State title in 49 years (since 1962) in 2011. Parker's tip-in with less than three seconds left gave CCSF an 83-81 victory over Citrus College in the 2011 California Community College Athletic Association championship game. The Rams finished the season 32-1 overall and ended the year on a 27-game winning streak. Parker earned Coast Conference Co- Most Valuable Player (with teammate Jonathon Williams) honors, leading the squad to a league title and an undefeated 12-0 mark. The Rams were 29-5 in his freshman season, as he led CCSF to a 61-6 overall record in his two seasons.
COACH WALTERS ON PARKER: De'End is a guy that obviously has played at a high level, won a state championship with City College of San Francisco. He gives us great size at the three position, but then also plays the two and can guard ones. I think he can be a great one for us. I love his athleticism; love his unselfishness and passing ability. We have known about De'End for a long time and didn't get him the first time, so we're really excited to get him the second time around. He's a city kid. He brings the city toughness that we like. I think he's really looking forward to the opportunity to help USF play, compete and win at the high level.
