(San Francisco) – Former University of San Francisco star guard and head coach Jim Brovelli headlines three Dons set for induction into the San Francisco Prep Hall of Fame Saturday, May 19 at Patio Espanol Restaurant. In addition to the 1984 West Coast Conference Coach of the Year, prep baseball coaching legend John Donohue and former USF baseball and football standout Gary Musante will be enshrined.

After an outstanding prep career at St. Ignatius in the City, Brovelli compiled a Hall-of-Fame playing resume for the Dons. After San Francisco posted a 10-15 record during Brovelli's first season on the varsity in 1961-62, the point guard, along with two-time All-American center Ollie Johnson, lifted the Dons to a 41-14 record and back-to-back NCAA Tournament berths. In Brovelli's final season on the Hilltop, USF achieved a final national ranking on No. 13.

After spending time as an assistant coach for mentor Pete Peletta, Brovelli was named head basketball coach at the University of San Diego for the 1973-74 campaign and guided the Toreros from a successful Division II program to full membership in the West Coast Conference. Brovelli guided USD to the 1984 WCC regular season championship and the program's first NCAA Tournament berth as a Division I school. Brovelli departed Alcala Park with 160 career victories.

Brovelli returned to his alma mater to serve as the head coach of San Francisco's “Back to Basketball” team in 1985-86. After rebuilding the program from the ground up, Brovelli guided the Dons to back-to-back winning seasons in 1993 (19-12) and 1994 (17-11) and his 1994 squad finished second in the league standings at 8-6. Brovelli posted 131 victories while at the helm for the Dons and still ranks No. 12 on the WCC coaching charts with 76 league triumphs and 291 all-time collegiate wins.

After departing USF after the 1994-95 campaign, Brovelli coached in the NBA as an assistant and served as the interim head coach for the Washington Bullets. Brovelli was inducted into the USF Athletics Hall of Fame as a player in 1982 and was named to the USD Hall of Fame as a coach in 2002.

John Donohue attended the University of San Francisco, graduating in 1973. A decade later he took over as head baseball coach at Lowell High School and has been there ever since, compiling a prolific career. Coach Donohue currently ranks No. 9 in California Prep Baseball Coaching history with 657 victories and counting. Donohue was named the California Coaches Association Baseball Coach of the Year (2006) and the West State Regional Coach of the Year (2007).

Gary Musante, a contemporary of Brovelli's at St. Ignatius, was a two-sport standout for the Dons. Musante played football for “Mackenzie's Raiders” and helped USF to a 4-2 slate in 1962 and also competed on the baseball squad for legendary coach Dutch Anderson.
