SAN LOUIS OBISPO, Calif. - In their first exhibition match of the 2012 season, the Dons men's soccer team played Cal Poly to a 1-1 double-overtime tie on Saturday night at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
San Francisco took a 1-0 lead at the 20:37 minute mark in the first half courtesy of a Miguel Aguilar strike. Assisted by Mauricio Diaz De Leon, Aguilar netted the first goal of the season for the Dons, after leading the team with five goals last season. Aguilar also paced the Dons with three shots on goal.
Cal Poly evened the score in the second half on Chris Gaschen's goal in the 72nd minute. Gaschen scored on a free kick from 30 yards out to cap the scoring for the night.
San Francisco outshot Cal Poly 7-3 in the first half, but the Mustangs tallied 12 shots in the second half compared to the Dons' three.
2011 WCC Goalkeeper of the Year Brendan Roslund played a perfect first half, giving way to freshman keeper Connor Gaal for the final 65 minutes of action. Roslund did not have to make a save, while Gaal made two in his first action in Green and Gold.
Junior transfer Liam Kelly and freshman Jacob Talarman both had two shots in their first game as Dons.
San Francisco will play its second exhibition match of the season on Friday, August 17 at 7:00 p.m. against Cal State Stanislaus.
