Ale Moves Atop Record Books In Loss

(San Francisco) - Senior Rheina Ale earned a top spot in the USF career record books Saturday, as San Francisco women's basketball dropped a 79-59 decision to No. 18/19 Gonzaga at War Memorial Gym in San Francisco. Ale played 36 minutes, moving into the top spot in the career record books for minutes played.

With the loss, USF drops to 4-22 overall 2-11 on the season, while Gonzaga improves to 22-4, 11-2.

With three games remaining in the regular season, Ale has played 3,644 career minutes. Jamie Shadian, who donned the Green and Gold from 1993-97, held the previous school record of 3,639. In 112 career games, Ale has averaged 32.5 minutes per game.

Ale, who will graduate this spring, currently holds spots in five spots in the all-time record books. After going a perfect 8-for-8 from the line Saturday, Ale sits second in free throw percentage, shooting at a .817 (358-438) clip from the line. The three-time captain is also tied in second all-time in 3-pointers made with 157. Ale also holds a spot in the all-time scoring ranks, tallying 1271 points to hold down ninth place. Also, thanks to her start Saturday, the native of Carson has amassed 108 career starts, ranking fifth all-time.

The Dons fell behind early to Gonzaga, going down by as many as 11 halfway through the first half. Down 22-11 at 8:27, San Francisco pieced together a 12-3 run to close the gap to two points. During the run, USF sank a pair of three's, while Ale tallied six of her eight first half points.

Gonzaga responded to the USF run by closing out the half on a 13-2 run, taking a 38-25 lead at halftime.

The second half was all Zags, as Gonzaga came out of the half strong. The Bulldogs never led by less than 11 in the half.

Ale finished the game leading a trio of USF Dons in double-digit scoring thanks to a game-high 19 points. Bailey Barbour added 12, while Jamie Katuna posted 10.

San Francisco shot well from the free-throw line, going 12-for-13 for a 92.3 percentage.

Kayla Standish led Gonzaga with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Saturday's game marked the annual "Play4Kay" game to promote breast cancer awareness. The Dons wore pink Under Armour shoes and pink headbands to support the cause. In addition, USF used pink towels on the benches, and the officials used pink whistles.

San Francisco will return to the court Thursday as they travel to Provo, Utah to take on league-leading BYU at 6 p.m. PST at the Marriott Center. The game can be viewed internationally on BYUtv.
