Late Goal From Mello Leads To 1-1 Tie At SJSU

Box Score San Jose, Calif. – Jaciara Mello tallied a gola in the 76th minute Friday, as the University of San Francisco women's soccer team recorded a 1-1 tie with San Jose State. The game marked the first of Jim Millinder's tenure on the Hilltop as head coach.

San Francisco starts the season 0-0-1 with the double overtime tie.

San Jose State (0-0-1) got out to an early lead, scoring the first goal of the match at 15:37.

The Spartans held onto their lead throughout the match, until the Dons rallied late. With 75:07 on the clock, SJSU was called on a foul, setting USF up to tie the match. Abigail Phillips took a set piece, which Jaciara Mello connected with, tapping into the goal.

San Francisco used a strong offensive attack during the game, out shooting San Jose State 15-11. Both defenses stepped up in extra time, allowing just five shots between in the two teams in overtime. Mackenzie Krieser led the Dons with eight shots, three on goal.

USF returns to the pitch Sunday as they host Fresno State at 1 p.m. The match at Negoesco will mark the home debut of this season's Green and Gold.
