Volleyball Sweeps LIU Brooklyn 3-0 in 2012 Asics Powerade Challenge Opener

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The San Francisco volleyball team won its first match of the 2012 Asics Powerade Challenge on Friday night, downing LIU Brooklyn in straight sets 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-22).
 
The Dons (5-3) won their first home game of the season in front of the War Memorial Gym faithful, attacking at an impressive .327 percentage.
 
The Blackbirds (3-4) pushed USF to the brink in the final set, leading much of the way, but sophomore Valentina Zaloznik came alive down the stretch to seal the sweep.
 
Zaloznik and Ester de Vries led the way with 12 kills each, while WCC Player of the Week Jocelyn Levig added 10 kills of her own. Leanna Ludes continued to set the pace for USF adding 37 assists to push her season total to 268.
 
The Dons took the second set by eight points, 25-17, attacking at an impressive .342 percentage. USF tallied 17 kills and only four errors in 38 attempts.
 
Through two sets, USF had 11 more kills, 13 more assists, and eight more digs than LIU Brooklyn.
 
The Dons and Blackbirds battled in a back-and-forth first set, with USF getting the better of LIU Brooklyn 25-21. Jocelyn Levig and Ester de Vries led the way for USF with four kills each, while Leanna Ludes contributed 13 assists.
 
Annika Foit paced LIU Brooklyn with five kills on 12 total attempts for a .333 attack percentage in the first set.
 
San Francisco will play two games tomorrow, with the first game set for 10:30 a.m. against La Salle and the second game set for a 7:00 p.m. tip against Cal State Northridge.
