USF Heads to the Pacific Northwest This Week
USF (8-11, 1-5 WCC) ventures outside the Bay Area for the first time since Christmas Day when the Dons meet the Portland Pilots (8-12, 1-4) Thursday night at the Chiles Center.
The road trip continues Saturday in Spokane, Wash., where the Dons will meet the 10th-ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs (17-2, 4-0 WCC; vs. BYU 1/24) at the McCarthey Center. USF has lost 23 straight games in Spokane dating back to its last win on Feb. 10, 1989.
USF snapped a five-game losing streak on Saturday with a 62-53 home win over Loyola Marymount, while the Pilots are coming off a 60-38 home loss to Saint Mary's.

USF-Portland Series
  • Beginning with the 1962-63 season, USF leads the all-time series with Portland, 57-25.
  • The Dons are 44-23 all-time vs. the Pilots in WCC play...the two teams have also met four times in the WCC Tournament, with the Dons holding a 3-1 edge.
  • USF has won 25 of the last 35 meetings between the two schools, including five straight.
  • The Dons have swept the season series each of the last two seasons.

USF is 6-4 at home this season and is 40-17 (.702) record in its last 57 home games dating back to the 2009-10 season. The Dons are 47-22 (.681) in Memorial Gymnasium in five seasons under head coach Rex Walters.
The Dons are 1-4 in true road games this season, with the only win coming at American on Nov. 19. Losses followed at Pacific, Nevada, Santa Clara and Saint Mary's.

Lineup Shuffle
Head coach Rex Walters employed his fourth starting lineup of the season vs. Loyola Marymount as freshman Matt Christiansen made his first career start in place of Tao Xu, who started the previous 16 games.
Sophomore Chris Adams made his fourth straight start vs. LMU after taking over for De'End Parker, who missed the BYU game with an aggravated wrist.
Cody Doolin, Cole Dickerson and Tim Derksen have started all 19 games this season.

Leaders in Their Field
Three USF players -- Cole Dickerson, Cody Doolin and De'End Parker -- rank in the top-35 nationally in various statistical categories.
Parker ranks 12th nationally in three-point field goal percentage at 50.0 (21-for-42) while Dickerson ranks 15th among the national leaders in reboound average (10.4).
Cody Doolin is averaging 5.7 assists per game to rank 32nd nationally.

From the Field
USF has shot 32.7 percent (34-for-104) from the field over the last two games vs. Santa Clara (16-for-50) and Loyola Marymount (18-for-54).
The Dons had shot 48.1 percent (210-for-436) from the field over the previous eight games, including a season-best 55.9 percent (33-for-59) vs. Dominican. USF is 5-3 this season when shooting 50 percent or better from the floor, with its only losses in those eight games coming against Ole Miss (50.9), BYU (50.0) and Saint Mary's (51.0).
USF currently ranks fourth in the WCC in field goal percentage at 44.7 percent.
Freshman Tim Derksen ranks fifth in the WCC in field goal percentage at 52.5 percent (62-for-118) while Cole Dickerson ranks 13th at 45.2 (103-for-228).

From Long Distance
USF ranks second in the WCC and 32nd nationally in three-point field goal percentage at 37.8 (135-for-357).
The Dons have made nine or more three-pointers in six games this season, including three of the last six contests vs. Santa Clara (9-for-22), BYU (11-for-24) and Saint Mary's (9-for-18).
USF is 10-for-43 (23.2 percent) from beyond the arc in its last two games vs. Santa Clara (3-for-19) and Santa Clara (3-for-19).
De'End Parker leads the WCC and ranks 12th nationally in three-point field goal percentage at 50.0 percent (21-for-42) while Avry Holmes ranks second in the conference at 47.1 percent (24-for-51).

Board Work
USF has been outrebounded in all six conference games vs. Santa Clara (33-42; 29-42), BYU (34-38), San Diego (27-34), Saint Mary's (23-31) and Loyola Marymount (38-43).
The Dons have been outboarded in 12 of the last 14 contests dating back to the St. John's game on Dec. 4 and rank eighth in the WCC in rebound average at 33.9 per game and ninth in rebound margin (-0.4). USF also ranks ninth in the WCC in offensive rebounds at 8.6 per game.
The Dons opened the season by outrebounding its first five opponents by a margin of 11.4 per game but lost the battle of the boards in its next six games vs. St. John's (34-37), Pacific (25-36), Nevada (30-45), Holy Cross (34-41), San Diego State (25-34), Ole Miss (27-33).

Charity Stripe Turnaround
USF is shooting 72.7 (123-for-169) percent from the line over the last nine games after converting on just 61.1 percent (132-for-216) of its charity tries over the first 10 games of the year. However, the Dons still rank ninth in the WCC in free throw percentage at 66.2.
Cody Doolin ranks fourth in the WCC in free throw percentage at 86.3 percent (69-for-80) while the rest of the team is shooting 60.9 percent (186-for-305) from the line.

Defensive Doings
USF held Loyola Marymount to 53 points last Saturday, tied for the second-lowest output of the season by an opponent. However, the Dons are allowing 68.7 points a game, which ranks eighth among WCC teams. Opponents are shooting 43.6 percent from the floor, which is the highest percentage allowed in the conference. The Dons also rank ninth in the conference in blocks (1.8) and eighth in steals (5.3) per game.

Dickerson's Doubles
Cole Dickerson is averaging a double-double 19 games into the 2012-13 campaign, as the junior forward from Federal Way, Wash. is scoring 14.9 points and grabbing 10.4 rebounds per game.
Dickerson has posted eight double-doubles in 19 games this season against Stanford (11-19), Cal State-East Bay (14-15), Columbia (10-14), Montana (19-20), Holy Cross (17-17), San Diego State (15-12), Dominican (30-10) and Santa Clara (17-12) and was a rebound away from double-doubles in four other games against Pacific (14-9), Nevada (11-9), East Tennessee State (19-9) and BYU (22-9).
The last USF player to average a double-double for an entire season was Darrell Tucker, when he scored 18.9 points and grabbed 10.1 rebounds a game in 2001-02.
Dickerson also posted double-doubles in exhibition games against San Francisco State (21-15) and UNC-Pemboke (24-10).
Dickerson averaged 7.1 ppg and 4.0 rpg in 34 games last season, including one start.

Doolin Climbing USF's Career Assist Chart
Junior point guard Cody Doolin ranks fourth in the WCC and 32nd nationally in assists per game (5.7). Doolin's career assist total now stands at 357, which ranks third on USF's all-time list behind Orlando Smart (902) and Gerald Walker (400).

Dons Ironmen
Cody Doolin is averaging 36.6 minutes per game, which ranks third among all conference players, while Cole Dickerson ranks fourth, averaging 33.5 minutes per game. Doolin has started all 87 games in his USF career.

Debuts
Eight players have made their USF debuts this season, including freshmen Tim Derksen, Coltin Gelb, Matt Christiansen, Avry Holmes, Tao Xu and redshirt freshman Mark Tollefsen.
De'End Parker, who spent last year at UCLA and Frank Rogers, who played at Cabrillo College, have also made their USF debuts this season.

Winning Ways
USF is 42-31 (.575) in their last 73 games following a 5-9 start to the 2010-11 season. USF has also made back-to-back postseason appearances under Rex Walters, competing in the CIT in 2010-11 and the CBI last season.
Last season, the Dons finished with an overall record of 20-14, marking the program's first 20-win season since 1981-82 (25-6).

USF Impressive in Overtime Under Walters
USF boasts an 8-1 record in overtime games under head coach Rex Walters. The Dons only overtime loss came at Colorado State, 91-75 in the 2009-10 season.

Staff Changes
Head coach Rex Walters has announced Brent Crews has been promoted from video coordinator to assistant coach. Michael Lee will assume the title of special assistant to the head coach.
