Just the Facts, Ma'am

  • San Francisco (8-11, 1-5 WCC) returns to War Memorial Gym for just the third time since conference play began and hopes to capitalize on home court advantage. USF is 6-3 on the season when playing on the Hilltop, and has only notched two wins away from the Bay, at Texas San Antonio and at Cal Poly.
  • Meanwhile, BYU (13-5, 4-1 WCC) enters with relative road woes of its own, despite a clean record of 3-0 overall against USF in San Francisco. Of the Cougars' five losses on the year, four have come away from Provo, including a 74-59 decision at Gonzaga in its last road trip on Jan. 17. BYU rebounded by knocking off Loyola Marymount at home, 72-53, in its last contest.
  • The second meeting between the Dons and Cougars this season, BYU recorded a 80-58 victory over USF at the Marriott Center after the Dons struggled to 25 percent shooting in the first half, and could not recover from the early deficit.

Devine's Dimes

  • “Anytime San Francisco plays BYU it's hard not to think about last year's upset at the Marriott Center.  The Dons came in with an RPI around 300 and knocked off a top 25 squad for the first time since beating Oregon at home in December 1999.  I have watched my DVR recording of the BYU game multiple times and still can't figure out why the Cougars missed so many shots in the lane!
“Water bottle day sounds like a great promotion.  I wonder if anyone will keep theirs for 20 years. I know someone who still has a USF refillable soda cup from the 1993 WCC Tourney—he's brought it to almost every WCC Tourney since then and said fill 'er up!" - USF play-by-play man, George Devine

Know the Foe

  • The Cougars were selected as the pre-season favorite to pace the West Coast Conference and win its first WCC regular season title. Last year, BYU finished second in league play before running through the conference tournament with the title, earning an automatic berth to the 2012 NCAA tournament.
  • Nationally, Haley Steed leads the NCAA in assists per game, dishing an impressive 8.0 assists to her teammates each night. Her 3.0 assist-to-turnover ratio comes in fourth in the country and as a team, the Cougars' 17.3 assists per game ranks 12th.

USF and BYU—The Series

  • The Dons and the Cougars have met nine times previously, with BYU holding a 8-1 all-time record. The lone USF win in the series came when USF stunned BYU at home in a 71-64 upset on Feb. 25, 2012. The road win against a Top 25 opponent was the first for the Dons in 16 years. [Last meeting - BYU 80, USF 58; Jan. 5]

Santa Clara Remix

  • Alicia Scafidi was an effective 5-of-7 from the floor and 2-of-3 from long range to lead the Dons with 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
  • Bailey Barbour's nine points and 14 minutes represent new season highs for the senior from Harbor City, Calif.
