SAN FRANCISCO—Saint Mary's scored two early goals within two minutes of each other and it was more than enough to defeat the Dons 4-1 on Wednesday night in West Coast Conference action.
Â
"It was not a good enough product," USF head coach Erik Visser said. "We got down 2-0 after 12 minutes, you start running behind the eight ball. I need to do a better job preparing this team for Santa Clara. It's my responsibility to do a better job to prepare these guys."
Â
The Dons (3-5-2, 0-2-1 WCC) are winless in their first WCC three matches for the first time since 2010 when they went the first eight matches without a win. San Francisco will have another chance to break into the win column at Santa Clara on Friday night.
Â
The Gaels (4-4-3, 2-0-1) struck first in the eighth minute when Michael Semenza caught a pass from Ismail Adam at the foot of the goal and his kick beat
Chase Hauser to put them up 1-0. Less than two minutes later, Saint Mary's capitalized on a corner kick when traffic in front of the goal left the Dons vulnerable an Alex Braman scored.
Â
It was Braman's third goal of the season for the WCC Player of the Week and third in less than a week.
Â
Saint Mary's got a third score in the 45th minute when Adam got a rebound from about 15 yards out and drilled his kick passed a recovering Hauser to put them up 3-0 before the half.
Â
The Gaels outshot San Francisco 11-4 in the half and put six shots on goal.
Â
San Francisco got on the board early in the second half when in the 49th minute
Jesus Del Toro had his shot ricochet off the right post and in for his season goal of the season.
Â
The Dons put little pressure on Saint Mary's goalie Andre Rawls, who had one save on the night, but had a chance in the 56th minute when
David Romney took a cross at the foot of the goal on the left side and had his shot sent away by Rawls.
Â
The four goals was a season-high for Saint Mary's, who have now scored seven goals in their last two matches.
