The Dandy Dons
  • Now 2-1 on the season after Friday night's 92-90 home loss to Nevada...opened the season with wins over Notre Dame de Namur (95-57) and Cleveland State (91-82).
  • Play host to Idaho State on Monday to close out a four-game homestand to open the season...will venture out on the road for the first time this week for games at Montana (Friday) and Oregon (Sunday).
  • Are 4-0 all-time vs. Idaho State, with the last meeting between the two schools taking place at the Purdue Invitational, a game won by the Dons, 85-56...all of the games in the series have been played on neutral courts.
  • Averaging 92.0 points three games into the season after tallying 95 vs. Notre Dame de Namur, 91 vs. Cleveland State and 90 vs. Nevada...first time since 1976-77 USF has opened the season with three straight games of 90 points or more.

TONIGHT'S GAME: The USF Dons (2-1, 0-0 WCC) play host to the Idaho State Bengals (1-1, 0-0 Big Sky) in the fourth and final game of a season-opening homestand. Both teams are coming off losses on Friday night, as the Dons dropped a 92-90 decision to Nevada while Idaho State fell at Arizona State, 88-60.

SERIES HISTORY WITH IDAHO STATE: USF leads the all-time series with Idaho State, 4-0. The two schools met for the first time in the 1957 NCAA Tournament, with USF claiming a 66-51 in the West Regional in Corvallis, Ore. The Dons and Bengals squared off again in the 1958 NCAA West Regional at the Cow Palace, with the Dons scoring a 57-51 decision. USF claimed a 90-76 victory on Nov. 26, 1997 at the Fresno State Classic. The two teams last met on Dec. 12, 1997 with the Dons coming away wth a 85-56 decision at the Purdue Invitational.

LAST TIME OUT: USF dropped its first game of the season last Friday night, falling to Nevada, 92-90 in Memorial Gymnasium. Cody Doolin scored a career high 33 points but only two other Dons - Mark Tollefsen (10) and Cole Dickerson (10) - managed to reach double figures. Nevada was paced by Deonte Burton's 33 points, 25 of which came in the second half.

HIGH-SCORING DONS: USF has sored 90 or more points in each of its first three games against Notre Dame de Namur (95), Cleveland State (91) and Nevada (90) and is averaging 92.0 points a game in the early going this season. The last time USF scored 90 or more points in three consecutive games to start the season was in 1976-77, when Bob Gaillard's Dons scored 90+ in four straight contests vs. San Francisco State (125-81), UC Santa Barbara (92-85), UC Davis (120-71) and California (93-71). The 1976-77 team scored a school-record 2,904 points in 31 games during a year that saw the Dons win their first 29 games and ascend to No. 1 in both major wire polls. the last time USF scored 90+ points in three straight games was in 1993-94 against Colgate (101-70), Miami of Ohio (100-72), Stanislaus State (106-82), Sacramento State (99-84) and McNeese State (98-69) under head coach Jim Brovelli.

BALANCED SCORING: USF has seven points averaging in double figures after three games, with sophomore Mark Tollefsen topping the team's scoring chart with a 14.3 point per game average. The Dons' seventh leading scorer is sophomore Tim Derksen with a 10.3 per game average.

FROM THE FLOOR: The Dons are shooting 50.5 percent from the floor over its first three games, which includes a season-best 56.9 percent effort against Cleveland State. Four players in the nine-man rotation are shooting 50 percent or better from the floor.

THE THREE-BALL: Three games into the season, the Dons are shooting 40.6 percent from three-point range, having made 28-of-69 of its long distance attempts. The Dons opened the season by canning 13 three-pointers against Notre Dame de Namur, including six in the first 4:30 of the game. USF led the West Coast Conference and ranked fifth nationally in three-point field goal percentage a year ago, connecting on 40.1 percent (249-for-621) of its long distance attempts. The Dons have set single-season school records for three-pointers made each of the last three seasons.

THE BENCH: USF's bench is averaging 32.6 points (98 total) a game thus far this season after scoring 44 in the opener against Notre Dame de Namur, 35 vs. Cleveland State and 19 vs. Nevada. Against the Argonauts, Kruize Pinkins came off the bench to score a game-high 19 points. Sophomore Tim Derksen gave the Dons a lift off the bench against Cleveland State, finishing with 17 points, including 12 in the second half.

TOLLEFSEN'S TALLY: Sophomore Mark Tollefsen is averaging 16.4 points (125 total) and while shooting 68.5 percent (48-for-70) from the field over his last eight games dating back to last season. The Danville, Calif. native started the last five games of the 2012-13 campaign and averaged 17.6 points while shooting 73.8 percent (31-for-42) from the field during that stretch. In three games this season, he is averaging a team-high 14.3 points and is shooting 60.7 percent from the floor.

DOOLIN'S CAREER NIGHT: Senior point guard Cody Doolin scored a career-high 33 points in a 92-90 loss to Nevada last Friday. Doolin was 12-of-17 from the floor, including 3-of-4 from three-point range, and converted 6-of-8 free throw attempts. His 33 point outburst followed games against Notre Dame de Namur (0) and Cleveland State (6) in which he was held under 10 points. Doolins's previous career high was 28 points, scored against Saint Mary's on March 3, 2012.

DICKERSON'S DOUBLES: Senior forward Cole Dickerson posted his first double-double of the season and 15th of his career last Wednesday night against Cleveland State, finishing with 12 points to go along with 12 rebouds. Dickerson finished with conference-high 13 double-doubles (points-rebounds) last season, a figure that ranked 24th nationally among Division I players. He was also a point or rebound away from a double-double in five other games. Dickerson pulled down 10 or more rebounds in 14 games, including a career-high 20 boards against Montana on Nov. 30.

DOOLIN'S STARTS: Senior Cody Doolin has has started every game (102) at the point guard position since arriving on the Hilltop in 2010-11. He needs 26 more games to tie Angelo Caloiaro's (2008-12) all-time school record for games played at 128.

GOOD HANDS: Over the first three games of the season, point guard Cody Doolin has dished out 22 assists, committed just four turnovers and has five steals.

DOOLIN's DIMES: With four assists against Nevada, Cody Doolin ran his career assist total to 445 assists, which ranks second on USF's all-time career list behind Orlando Smart, who totaled 902 assists from 1990-94. His assist average of 5.6 a year ago ranked third in the WCC and 34th nationally. His 2012-13 assist total of 174 ranked fifth on USF's all-time single-season charts.

AVRY FOR THREE: Three games into the season, sophomore Avry Holmes is shooting 63.6 percent from three-point range, having made 7-of-11 of his long distance attempts. In 32 career games, Holmes is shooting 48.9 percent (48-for-98) from long distance. Last season as a freshman, Holmes led the WCC in three-point field goal percentage at .471 (41-for-87), which was the third-high single-season mark in school history (min. 2 attempts per team game). However, he did not meet the NCAA standard of 2.5 made per team game to qualify among the national leaders. Holmes has made at least one three-pointer in 29 of his 32 career games, including 25 in a row.


DONS SIGN THREE TO NLI'S: USF signed three players to National Letters of Intent on Nov. 13. Frankie Ferrari , a 5-11 guard from Burlingame (Calif.) High School and Chase Foster, a 6-5 forward from Valor Christian High School in Highlands Ranch, Colo. will join the Dons next season. Jared Stutzman, a 6-5 forward from Bonneville School in Idaho Falls, will enroll at the University for the 2016-17 season following a two-year church mission.
