Just the Facts, Ma'am
-
San Francisco (9-12, 2-6 WCC) embarks on a three-game home stand that starts with San Diego on Saturday. The Dons return home after dropping a close contest to Saint Mary's on a rare Monday game.
-
San Diego (14-7, 6-3 WCC) travels to the Hilltop for the season's first meeting between the Dons and the Toreros. USF is riding a three-game winning streak, with wins against Portland, at Pepperdine and most recently against Santa Clara on Thursday night.
Devine's Dimes
-
"The San Diego-USF series has been an intriguing one over the years. The 2002 Dons may have notched their most-dominant performance of an 18-win season with a 79-55 thrashing of the Toreros in San Diego. Another great memory came in the 2007 WCC Tournament, when No. 7-seed USF ousted No. 2 San Diego, 80-69. I'll never forget the shot Breann Sitton made from the right baseline at the buzzer before halftime. That happened to be the only time she ever took a buzzer beater and it hit nothing but the bottom of the net!" - USF play-by-play man George Divine on San Diego
Know the Foe
-
The Toreros enter Saturday's contest with the top scoring offense in the WCC, averaging 68.2 points per game on 44.2 percent shooting from the field. Junior Amy Kame leads the way, averaging 17.0 points per game with .419 shooting form the floor.
-
Maya Hood, who has started the last 12 games for the Toreros hits an impressive 54.4 percent of her attempts from the field to rank second on the team in scoring (9.8 ppg). Klara Wischer was named WCC Player of the Week after pacing the Toreros with 15.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game in wins over Portland and Pepperdine.
-
Coupled with its high-powered scoring attack, San Diego swats the second-most shots per night in the league (4.4 bpg) and pulls down 42.9 rebounds a game, also good for second in the WCC.
-
The Toreros are coming off a 2011-12 campaign in which the team advanced to the semifinals of the WNIT, winning at Texas Tech and at Washington, before falling to the eventual champions, Oklahoma State.
USF and San Diego—The Series
-
The Dons and the Toreros have met 57 times over the years. San Diego holds the 33-24 overall advantage in the series that dates back to the 1986-87 season. The Toreros enter War Memorial Gym riding a 10-game winning streak against USF with the Dons' last win over San Diego coming Jan. 12, 2008.
Saint Mary's Remix
-
Alexa Hardick made it rain threes in Moraga, Calif., hitting 6-of-8 from long range to finish as USF's leading scorer with 18 points. This marks a new career-high for the junior from Dallas, Texas, doubling her previous best of nine points, set at Pepperdine on Jan. 10.
-
Hardick nearly had a school-record-tying seven threes in one contest after draining a halfcourt triple at the halftime buzzer, but the shot was ruled a tick too late. The current benchmark has been on the books since 1992 when Amy Touli poured in seven from beyond the arc, and that feat was matched in 1997 as Andrea Kagie did the same.
-
Denae Mary Williams swatted a career-high four balls as the Dons combined for a season-high nine blocks against the Gaels.
