SAN FRANCISCO – The University of San Francisco men's tennis team returned to the court after a one-week layoff to defeat the Sacramento State Hornets, 6-1, Sunday afternoon at the Cal Club.
With the win, the Dons evened their spring record at 2-2, including a 2-0 mark at home, and the Hornets fell to 1-4.
After taking the doubles point, USF sealed the victory by jumping out to a 4-0 lead thanks to three consecutive victories by
Germain Bahri,
Bernardo Saraiva and
Rich Van Hout in singles play. The Dons would go on to drop just one of the remaining three matches to close the day.
"It was a good win for the guys today,” said USF coach
Peter Bartlett. “The 6-1 final score didn't indicate how close the match was -- we did a very good job when the pressure was on to close some of the matches out. These are the type of matches we need to continue to get comfortable in because they will help us going forward. New players
Rich Van Hout and
Nils Skajaa were both able to get victories today which really helped the team but all around everybody contributed."
The Dons play host to the UC Davis Aggies (4-3, 0-1 Big West) on Friday, Feb. 15 at 1 p.m. at the Harbor Bay Club in Alameda, Calif.
