SAN FRANCISCO –
The University of San Francisco baseball team was swept in its first series of the season, falling 10-5 to Cal Poly after losing to the Mustangs Friday and Saturday. The Dons last started a season losing three in a row in 2011, when they bounced back to win the West Coast Conference title with an overall record of 32-25.

After Cal Poly scored in the top of the third on an Elliot Stewart sacrifice fly, the Dons answered in the bottom of the inning on a Mitchell Rowan sacrifice fly that scored Josh Miller.

USF went ahead in the fifth on a two-run opposite field home run by designated hitter Zachary Turner that scored Josh Miller who had doubled.

The lead didn't last long, as the Mustangs scored seven runs in the sixth. Elliott Stewart homered to lead off the inning, hitting a high shot down the left field line. David Armendariz doubled a home a pair a few batters later, and catcher Chris Hoo, who had a bases-clearing double Friday, hit a grand slam to finish the scoring.

After giving up one run in the seventh and eighth, the Dons put a pair on the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth when Jourdan Weiks and Michael Eaton scored on Cal Poly errors.

Bryan Granger (1-0) was the winning pitcher for the Mustangs. KJ Edson (0-1) took the loss for the Dons.

“We want to build on the things we did well and build on the things we didn't do well,” said USF Head Coach Nino Giarratano. “We had a chance to win all three games this weekend, we were in every game and if we keep those big innings off the board maybe we win a couple of games.”

The Dons are back in action next week when they host San Francisco State. The game, originally scheduled for Tuesday, may be moved later in the week due to inclement weather. Check USFDons.com for updates.
