COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – University of San Francisco junior Malina Terrell will showcase her skills in an open tryout for the U.S. Women's National Volleyball Team Feb. 22-24.

The tryouts, which will take place at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., feature a projected record of 248 athletes from 90 colleges across the country.

“This is a great opportunity for Malina to go and compete with the best volleyball players in the country and to see what it really takes to play in highest level of competition,” USF head coach Gilad Doron said. “We are really proud of Malina, and I think this is a great chance for her to go and learn some skills that she can bring back and share with the team leading into her senior year.”

Throughout the three-day process, USA Volleyball will be identifying prospective athletes to fill the various teams and programs of USA Volleyball, which includes not only the National Team, but also the Senior A2 Team and the Junior National Team. Terrell is one of sixty outside hitters participating in the tryouts.

During the 2012 season with the Dons, Terrell was second on the squad in total blocks, with 68, and finished with a team-high 0.76 blocks per set. She finished the season with the second-best attack percentage, averaging 1.98 kills per set converting on 29.7 percent of her attempts. She posted a season-high15 kills and six blocks when USF traveled to San Diego on Sept. 20.

Terrell was honored as a member of the 2011 all-West Coast Conference first team after leading the Dons with a .348 attack percentage while amassing 227 kills. She will be one of 11 women from the WCC at the tryout.

“It is always an honor to have the opportunity to represent your country, and I hope she can make one of the selected teams,” Doron said. “It is exciting for the program to be producing talented players that have a chance to compete for USA Volleyball. It's an honor for USF to be able to send her to represent our University.”
