Just the Facts, Ma'am

No. 8 seed San Francisco (12-18, 4-12 WCC) looks to exact some payback on fifth-seeded Loyola Marymount (12-17, 6-10 WCC) in the second round of the West Coast Conference Championships. The Dons had a shot at finishing sixth in the conference standings, but LMU thwarted their plans with a heartbreaking three-point loss on Senior Day.

The last time the Dons won its first tournament game was 2006-07 after beating San Diego 80-69 on March 1, 2007, before falling to Gonzaga 59-38 in its next time on the court.

The last time Loyola Marymount and USF faced off in the tournament brackets was Feb. 29, 2012, as the Lions posted a 66-60 opening round win.

All 16 games of the men's and women's West Coast Conference Championships will be televised, with BYUtv hosting the women's games through the tournament semifinals. The play-by-play of Dave McCann will be complemented by analysis from Steve Cleveland and Blaine Fowler, with studio host Jarom Jordan throughout the tournament.

Senior Mel Khlok headlined the USF selections for the WCC's postseason awards, picking up All-West Coast Conference team. Khlok, who led the Dons in points (15.1, 4th in WCC), assists (3.4, 6th in WCC), steals (2.5) and minutes (35.8, 1st in WCC), becomes the 21st USF selection to the all-conference team.

Freshmen Taylor Proctor and Zhane Dikes were tapped as selections for the All-Freshman team. This is the first USF freshmen tandem to be honored during the WCC awards season since the 1994-95 campaign when USF made its first NCAA tournament appearance. The next season, the Dons advanced all the way to the Sweet Sixteen.

Alicia Scafidi was named to the WCC's All-Academic team for her 3.6 grade-point average in exercise sport science. Junior Alexa Hardick earned All-Academic honorable mention to round out the postseason honorees.

The Lions are led by the WCC all-time leading scorer and newly selected all-conference team member, Alex Cowling. Entering Thursday's contest, she has 2,187 total points, and is averaging 15.8 points a night for Loyola Marymount this season.

The Lions took the slight all-time series lead at 30-29 to close the 2012-13 regular season on Senior Day. These two teams have met six times in postseason action, with the record knotted at 3-3.

USF's opening round win over Pepperdine was a banner night, with five players scoring in double-digits for the first time in the Azzi Era.

Mel Khlok's 13-for-13 night at the free throw line constitutes a new school record for a most attempts at the stripe during a perfect game. As a team, the dons sunk 21-of-22 from the line, a season– and Azzi Era– best (min. 10 attempts).

Senior Bailey Barbour nabbed her second-consecutive double-double, going for career highs of 14 points and 12 rebounds. After missing the last game of the season to attend her father's funeral, Alicia Scafidi posted a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double. This is the fourth game of the season in which the Dons have finished with at least two double-doubles.

The 80-48 win serves as the largest margin of victory over a Division I opponent this year, and the biggest since Nov. 25, 2005's 80-44 win over Rider.

USF's 50-9 percent shooting from the floor represents the highest of the season. The last time the Dons shot over 50 percent was versus Sacramento State on Dec. 17, 2011.

Dons WCC Tournament History

USF owns a 15-16 record in the tournament, including a nine-game win streak from 1995-1997 in which the Dons earned three-straight tournament championships.

In the first WCC tournament in 1992, USF was defeated by Santa Clara in the championship game of the four-team event.

With Wednesday's victory, the Dons won its first posteason game since the event was moved to the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas in the 2008-09 season.
