SAN FRANCISCO—The Dons got off to a solid start last weekend and aim to improve on that this weekend when they take on San Jose State and Detroit Mercy.

USF (1-0-0) had many opportunities for goals in its match against Nevada last Sunday and although the Dons were able to come away with the 2-0 win, Head Coach Jim Millinder thinks his team needs to capitalize on more of those chances.

"The theme of the Nevada game was when the opportunities present themselves, we have to take advantage of them," he said. "It's early in the season. The most important thing is that we win games and keep improving."

Mackenzie Krieser took seven shots against Nevada, putting five on goal and finding the back of the net once. Freshman Lexie Krueger scored within seconds of entering the match for her first collegiate match.

"We're just deeper this year and I think a lot of the freshmen are players that can come in and help us immediately," Millinder said.

Freshmen Jessica Nakae and Amanda Whittle made their first career starts against Nevada.

The Dons opened the season with San Jose State last season and have had the Spartans on the schedule in eight of the last nine seasons.

San Jose State (0-2-0) comes in having lost its first two matches at the University of San Diego Tournament, including a 5-1 contest against USF's conference rival San Diego. The only two goals scored by the Spartans came from redshirt sophomore Lupita Estrada.

Detroit Mercy (0-1-1) has peppered the goal in its first couple of matches. The Titans have scored four goals in its first two games but have been unable to come away with a win.

Haley Burtraw and Anna Mindling have each scored two goals.

The Titans' defense is in question as they have allowed 41 shots to be taken with 16 of them on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Martha Dunbar has 10 saves after playing 155 of the team's 200 minutes played.

"We've got to play one game at a time," Millinder said. "We can't live on what we did last week. For us we've got to play good defense, we've got to do a good job finishing our chances if we do that we'll have an opportunity to win the game(s)."

Both matches are the first half of two doubleheaders at Negoesco Stadium this weekend with the men's team playing host to LIU Brooklyn and Air Force.
