SAN FRANCISCO—The Dons let a number of chances slip away and it cost them as Detroit scored the only goal of the match with less than a minute to go in overtime, taking the match 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.
Â
USF (2-1-0) had its two-match winning streak snapped and will return to the pitch on Friday against UC Davis.
Â
"It's a sick feeling for my players right now but maybe they need to feel that," Head Coach
Jim Millinder said. "Hopefully it will be a good learning experience for them."
Â
Detroit (1-2-1) earned a corner kick late in overtime and the Titans took full advantage. Alyssa Lotito found Alyssa Riley in front of the goal with 47 seconds left for a header to win the match.
Â
It was Detroit's sixth corner kick of the match and one of two in the overtime period.
Â
USF had a number of opportunities to take the lead late in regulation. In the 87th minute,
Jaciara Mello had a look from the top of the box but sent it high.
Mackenzie Krieser had two chances but had one blocked and the other go high.
Â
In the 84th minute, Detroit's Haley Burtraw had a chance of her own but had it knocked away on a tackle by
Leticia Torres.
Â
"We didn't have the energy, the effort I didn't think," Millinder said. "When you have to play anyone at the Division I level, anybody can beat you any given time. If you don't finish your chances and don't bring that effort every match, this is what happens."
Â
The Dons dominated most of the first half and was able to get off 13 shots while preventing Detroit to even get off one.
Â
One of the best chances the Dons had came in the 21st minute when
Jessica Nakae dished a lead pass to
Mackenzie Krieser who had a shot to put the Dons on top but was met at the ball by Detroit goalie Martha Dunbar, who blocked the shot. Krieser got another shot off a rebound but that attempt went high.
Â
Dunbar had eight saves for the Titans.
