LONG BEACH, Calif.—The Dons and Long Beach State were locked in a defensive battle the entire match but it was the 49ers how finally broke through with a late goal to take the 1-0 win on Thursday night.

San Francisco and Long Beach State came into the match with their defenses being their key to success. Going into the matchup, the Dons were 37th in the nation in goals average against. Long Beach State came in having won five of their last six games and having only allowed five goals during that stretch.

The game played true to form with no one scoring until the final minutes.

Long Beach State's Celeste Dominguez took a pass from Hannah Sanders in the 86th minute drilled it from about 12 yards out into the upper left corner of the goal to give the 49ers the 1-0 lead. The Dons (5-3-2) came back down and had a chance to strike back.
Amanda Whittle's corner kick was received by
Halle Bissin but her shot went wide right of the goal.

The Dons have one win since Sept. 8 and have scored two goals in the last five matches.

Both teams began the game on the attack, trying to gain an early advantage. The Dons had two corner kicks within the first 15 minutes of the match and had a header from Bissin saved by Kaci McCain.

Madalyn Schiffel were bothered much by potential shooters. The teams combined to put six shots on goal, two of which were from the Dons.

San Francisco returns home for its final nonleague match and will face No. 11 California, who participated in the USF Tournament in early September, on Monday at 7 p.m., which will be live on the West Coast Conference's official digital network, TheW.tv.
