SAN FRANCISCO—The Dons have had an opportunity to win nearly every game they have played this season and recently have found it hard to get a goal. For San Francisco to beat No. 11 Cal on Monday night, that will have to change.
Â
The Dons (5-3-2) are 1-2-2 in their last five matches, all away from home, and have scored two goals in that stretch. Freshman
Lexie Krueger is the only Don with more than one goal and is tied for seventh in the WCC with three scores. Five other Dons have one goal apiece.
Â
Luckily for the Dons, their defense has been the key to their early success. Entering Monday, the Dons are 41st in the nation (first in the West Coast Conference) in goal against average.
Â
LAST TIME OUT
The Dons' defense held firm until late in its contest against Long Beach State when the 49ers were finally able to get on the board and off USF for the 1-0 win. San Francisco was shutout for the third time in five matches.
Â
SCOUTING CAL (6-0-3)
Cal has scored at least two goals in all but two matches this season and when the Golden Bears were at Negoesco Stadium in early September they scored six goals in two games against Harvard and UC Davis.
Â
Samantha Witteman and Ifeoma Onumonu have six goals each. Witteman's performance has been eye catching as she has scored her six goals in 12 total shots.
Â
Goalkeeper Emily Kruger has been nearly as impressive, having allowed only seven goals through the Bears' first nine contests.
Â
LAST MEETING WITH CALIFORNIA (2012)
Cal leads the all-time series 3-13-2 which included a 3-0 victory over the Dons last season in Berkeley. Onumonu scored in that match.
Madalyn Schiffel had to fight off 10 shots on goal in last year's meeting and recorded seven saves.
