The University of San Francisco women's volleyball looks for its first win of the season as it welcomes top-tier teams from Air Force, Long Beach State and Miami (FL) for the Bay Area Challenge.

Long Beach State, perennial volleyball powerhouse, returns to the Hilltop for the first time since 1985. Since Brian Gimmillaro assumed head coaching duties in 1985, the 49ers have appeared in the field of all but two NCAA Tournaments, with 2012 marking the first miss since 1986. Air Force, USF's second opponent of the Challenge, is also looking to notch their first win of the year. Miami is the third USF opponenet of the season that is a member institution of the ACC, a league that will make up nearly one-third of the Dons' non-conference slate.

Following the Bay Area Challenge, the Dons will travel to their final non-conference tournament of the season next weekend, playing four matches in two days against SMU, Northeastern, Harvard and San Diego State at the Aztec Invitational.

Potent Quotables

"We are excited to be at home and hosting some really great teams. Long Beach is traditionally one of the most decorated former National Champions and it's an honor to have them in War Memorial for the first time since the 80s. The team has done a great job this week after a long travel weekend to smooth out some wrinkles and to get more comfortable with our system. We are excited after a very close matches in Tennessee to playing in front of a great home crowd on our home floor." - associate head coach, Ken Ko

Blue Raider Bash Remix

USF went 0-3 in its opening weekend of action, but did not go down without a fight. The Dons took Middle Tennesse and Notre Dame to the max, and came back from a 0-2 deficit against the Fighting Irish to force a fifth set.

Senior Malina Terrell was named to the Blue Raider Bash All-Tournament team after posting a team-high 46 kills on a .340 attack percentage. With her tally in the tournament, the Richmond, Calif., native has compiled 700 total kills as a Don to stand in 19th on the career kills list. Fellow senior, Rebecca Kopilovitch surpassed the career 1,000-dig mark after scooping up 54 balls in USF's three games. She now stands in seventh all-time with 1,026 total digs and needs just 12 more to move to sixth.

Schedule Tested – Conference Prepared

All told, the Dons will compete against a stacked schedule featuring 10 NCAA tournament teams from a year ago, comprising more than half of USF's 19 opponents for the 2013 season. USF will play 16 of its 28 matches against teams that made the NCAA field of 64 in 2012. Included in the mix are postseason perennials North Carolina and Long Beach State, new ACC member Notre Dame and Mountain West co-champion San Diego State, along with the always stout West Coast Conference slate.

Home is Where the Heart Is

... and for the USF volleyball team, their heart is in the City by the Bay. All told, the Dons have traveled more the 53,220 miles from Hometown to the Hilltop and represent six countries, and three states.
