Just the Facts, Ma'am

The University of San Francisco women's basketball team continues the first week of West Coast Conference action at Loyola Marymount, the second of three road games to start league play.

The Dons are looking to put together a complete game, something that was absent last time on the court, after USF could not manage to beat back Santa Clara's comeback bid in its last game out.

Santa Clara Remix

In a virtual tale of two halves, the Dons succumbed to the Broncos 81-72 despite leading by as many as 12 points early in the second half.

The Dons enjoyed a 22-18 rebounding edge in the first half, including a 13-6 advantage on the offensive glass. USF earned 21 second-chance points in the first, but only managed three in the second half, losing the battle of the boards 37-33 on the night.

What 2 Watch 4
The Dons sport a 5-7 record after dropping its first WCC contest of the season. USF has four women averaging double-digit scoring, with Rachel Howard and Zhané Dikes each posting 12.4 points per game.

Taj Winston puts up 11.7 per contest, and Taylor Proctor's 10.9 points a game rounds out USF's double-digit scorers. Proctor paces the team in rebounding, notching 7.8 boards a night for the Green & Gold, a mark good for seventh in the WCC.

Know the Foe - Loyola Marymount
The Lions are paced by 14.5 points from the hand of (senior?) leader Hazel Ramirez. Also joining the scoring fray is Deanna Johnson, who puts up 11.7 points per game. Rebounding duties fall to the duo of Mackenzie Kerins (8.6 rpg) and Emily Ben-Jumbo (5.8 rpg).

Loyola Marymount, picked to finish sixth in the preseason coaches poll, has dropped three straight contests, opening conference play on the road against two of the top teams in the league will losses at BYU and San Diego by a combined score of 176-135.

USF and Loyola Marymount - The Series
Loyola Marymount leads the all-time series 33-31
USF's record vs. the Lions • At home: 16-13 • Away: 12-16 • Neutral: 3-4
Last win at Loyola Marymount: Dec. 31, 2011 - 61-59
Last win in series: Dec. 31, 2011 - 61-59
Current streak: The Dons have lost last five vs. the Lions, dropping all three contests last year, including a season-ending 75-53 affair in the WCC Championships. In that game, the Lions had four double-digit scorers, with Deanna Johnson's 17 points leading the way. For the Dons, Mel Khlok capped her collegiate career with a game-high 22 points.

On the Air

Listen to longtime voice of the Dons and commentator for the 2013-14 TheW.tv slate, George Devine behind the mic all season long. Devine is in his 18th season as the play-by-play voice of USF women's basketball.

Hear the call and follow along with live stats and video for all home contests at War Memorial Gym, in partnership with Stretch Internet. Catch the action for both home and away games at usfdons.com/LIVE.

Devine's Dimes
"Gersten Pavilion holds a special place in my heart. I called my first ever WCC Tournament game here in 1997. It's also the last place the Dons ever won a WCC Tournament, also in '97.  Fast forward 10 months to January 1998, and the first-ever, regular season broadcast of Dons basketball originated from Gersten.

"It's hard to enter this building and not think of the late Hank Gathers. Gathers electrified America 25 years ago with his sensational play. He was a natural in front of any camera or microphone too!"

On the Horizon
USF's conference-opening week is marked by three road contests. After Thursday's game at Loyola Marymount, USF travels to Pepperdine to face the Waves Saturday at 2 p.m.
