BERKELEY, Calif. – The San Francisco men's tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to open the season against No. 16 California Tuesday at the Channing Tennis Courts.

"We lost 4-0, but I thought the guys really fought hard and had opportunities to win many sets," head coach Pablo Pires de Almeida said. "In singles, Nils Skajaa was up in the second set ready to win the match when it was clinched and matches were suspended."

The Bears won the doubles point to begin the competition with wins at the Nos. 2 and 3 positions. The first two singles matches of the day went the way of the hosts as well, to give Cal the 3-0 match lead. Andre Goransson, ranked 85th by ITA Tennis, sealed the match with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Rich Van Hout to conclude the action.

Skajaa, a sophomore from Odder, Denmark, won his first set over No. 74 Campbell Johnson, 6-4. He led in the second set 5-2 when Cal earned its fourth point to clinch the victory and suspend all remaining play.

Up next, the Dons compete at UC Davis on Feb. 1, before opening the home slate against Nevada Feb. 3, at The Olympic Club.
