EL SEGUNDO, Calif. – The San Francisco Dons find themselves in sixth in the West Coast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, announced by the league offices at the WCC Tip-off event at the Time Warner Cable Sports Studios.
USF returns its core from last year's team, which finished off the season winning three of its last four games, including a first round victory in the WCC Championship tournament over Loyola Marymount. All five starters from that squad are joined by four newcomers and a deep bench that is expected to make an impact in 2014-15.
Two juniors for the Dons were tapped for All-WCC Preseason honors,
Taylor Proctor and
Zhané Dikes. Both honorable mention selections a year ago, Proctor and Dikes paced USF in a variety of categories in 2013-14.
Proctor, a 6-0 forward from Colorado Springs, Colo., averaged team-leading numbers of 14.0 points of .442 shooting and 7.3 rebounds a game. From the point guard position, Dikes added 2.7 assists per game to lead the Dons. The 5-9 guard from Las Vegas, Nev., also contributed 11.8 points and 4.6 rebounds a night. The Dons and the BYU Cougars are the only teams in the conference to pick up multiple selections on the preseason team.
As a team, USF comes in receiving 37 total votes, and defending champions, Gonzaga, were picked to repeat. Gonzaga has won at least a share of the last 10 WCC regular-season championships, but a tighter race at the top of the polls was seen. The Bulldogs received seven first-place votes while BYU nabbed two votes and San Diego took the remaining first-place nod.
