DAVIS, Calif. – The San Francisco men's tennis team notched its first victory of the season, taking down UC Davis 4-3 at Marya Welch Tennis Center Saturday.
The hotly contest match came down to the final singles dual on the court, as junior
Rich Van Hout outlasted Parker Kelley, 5-6, 6-1, 6-5(6) to clinch the match for the Dons.
"We had a good start in doubles, but in singles we struggled to get off to good starts to the even matches," head coach
Pablo Pires de Almeida said. "It all came down to Rich playing against a crowd of about 100 people cheering against him to win in a tiebreaker!"
Bernardo Saraiva's straight-set victory over Kyle Miller gave USF a 2-0 lead that was extended after
James Tallman dispatched James Wade, 6-4, 6-3. The Aggies roared back to take the next three points before Van Hout clinched the match on the third set tiebreaker.
"It was a huge confidence booster for the team, and it came down to fitness, so we need to thank strength and conditioning coach Brian and athletic trainer Anastasia for the great preparation," Pires de Almeida said.
USF stands at 1-1 on the year after keeping UC Davis winless (0-3) on the season.
Next, the Dons face off with Nevada in its home opener at The Olympic Club Monday at 11 a.m.
