SAN FRANCISCO – Headlined by four total wins by
Bernardo Saraiva, the San Francisco men's tennis team picked up a pair of victories Monday at Golden Gate Park.
Saraiva, a junior from Lisbon, Portugal, started the day with partner
Nils Skajaa, as the duo earned a victory against Sebastian Hagn and Dawoud Kabli, 8-2, to set the tone for the day. Minutes later
Christian Brockstedt and
Timothy Tan clinched the doubles point, and the tandem of
Thomas Takemoto and
James Tallman made it a sweep.
The Dons jumped out to wins in Nos. 1 and 2 singles as Saravia and Skajaa raced to two-set victories.
Rich Van Hout clinched the win with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Rodrigo Campos in the No. 4 spot and the Dons battled for three-set victories in the final three matches of the contest to earn the sweep.
In the afternoon, USF took on Sonoma State and delivered with 5-2 victory. The Dons again jumped out to the advantage, sweeping the doubles point from the Seawolves, ranked 48th in NCAA Division II tennis by the ITA.
Saraiva nabbed his fourth win of the day to start the singles slate against Sonoma State, defeating Matt Roberts 6-0, 6-4. Takemoto was next to finish after downing Philip Holbrook 6-1, 6-0.
USF's clinching point went to
Johan Samuelsson. The junior from Malmo, Sweden, gave the Dons its fourth point with a straight-set win over Logan Liddell on his 22nd birthday.
Jason Lee earned his first dual match victory wearing Green and Gold, as USF went on to post the 5-2 win over Sonoma State.
With the pair of wins, the Dons move to 8-5 on the season, and notch a three-match winning streak. In its next match, USF plays newest conference foe Pacific Tuesday at 1 p.m., at the Cal Club.
