SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco women's tennis team picked up its first West Coast Conference win Wednesday after downing Loyola Marymount 7-0 at The Olympic Club.
The Dons put together a solid showing from top to bottom to pic up its third-straight victory, all in shut-out fashion. With the win, USF moves to 11-4 on the season and 1-2 in WCC action, as Loyola Marymount stands at 6-9 and is still seeking its first conference victory of the year.
USF opened the day by nabbing the doubles point in resounding fashion. No. 1 pair of
Sofia Holmberg and
Thyra Taune took care of LMU's Miya Jin and Jessica Perez, 8-4, and the duo of
Andrea Ka and
Marina Nikolic added an 8-3 victory over its opponents to set the tone for the match. For Ka and Nikolic, the win marks the fifth in a row for the tandem, as the pair moves to 11-3 in the dual match season.
In singles play, the Dons were dominant, with USF taking straight-set wins in the top four matches of the day, headed by Ka's 6-1, 6-4 win over Perez at the No. 1 singles position. Ka, a sophomore from Paris, France, now stands at 4-0 from the top spot in the USF lineup on the season, and sports an 11-2 record. She now stands at 3-0 in WCC play.
Nikolic, a junior from Mountain View, Calif., also kept her undefeated WCC record intact after dispatching Lauri Mueller, 6-4, 6-2, from the No. 4 position. Nikolic improved her spring mark to 11-3 and now stands at 19-8 on the year, including fall tournament action.
Taune and Holmberg also picked up points for USF to come away from the day with victories in both singles and doubles action. It took an extra set for both
Milica Hadzi-Tanovic and
Brooke Irish to close their match, but both Dons reigned victorious to keep USF's sweep intact.Â
With their singles wins, Taune and Irish now stand at 10 wins in the dual match season to join Ka and Nikolic with double-digit victory tallies.
Up next, USF seeks to expand on its perfect 5-0 home court record against a formidable WCC foe. The Dons square off with No. 36 Pepperdine Friday, with first serve from The Olympic Club slated for 10 a.m.
