SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The San Francisco men's tennis team posted a resounding 6-1 victory over Sacramento State at Rio Del Oro Racquet Club Saturday afternoon.
Rebounding from a Friday loss in their West Coast Conference opener, the Dons handily defeated the Hornets, beginning with a sweep of the doubles matches to earn the first point of the match.
No. 1 doubles tandem of
Bernardo Saraiva and
Nils Skajaa led the day with an 8-4 win over Oliver Anderson and Niranjan Ram. USF's
Germain Bahri and
Christian Brockstedt took their match 8-7 (12-10), outlasting their opponents in a close tiebreaker. The new duo of
Thomas Takemoto and
James Tallman, pairing up for both matches of the weekend, earned the 8-6 victory from the No. 3 position to cap the doubles sweep.
Rich Van Hout picked up a straight-set win from the No. 6 singles position to stop a four-match slide and put the Dons up 2-0. Saraiva added a point from the top of the Dons' lineup before Skajaa clinched the victory.
The sophomore from Odder, Denmark, jumped out to the lead after taking the first from Sacramento State's Tom Miller. In the second, Skajaa found himself down 5-2 midway through the action before battling back to take the two-setter, 6-4, 7-5 and give USF its fourth point of the day.
The Dons picked up two more points from Takemoto and Tallman, both three-set victories, to finish the match with a final score of 6-1.
With the win, USF improves to 6-5 (0-1 WCC) on the season while the Hornets slide to 2-9.
The Dons have a busy week ahead, beginning with a double-header Monday at Golden Gate Park, in tandem with the women's program. USF will host Youngstown State and Sonoma State, with action slated to start at 11:30 a.m.
