PROVO, Utah – The San Francisco women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to BYU Saturday at the Outdoor Tennis Courts.
The Dons raced out to the lead, nabbing the doubles point in resounding fashion to start the day. All three USF tandems earned wins against the Cougars, in similar fashion to the previous day's match against Nevada.
As singles action commenced,
Andrea Ka opened up with a 6-3, 6-4 victory from the No. 1 position to put the Dons up 2-0 over the hosts. Ka, a sophomore from Paris, France, brings her dual match record to 8-2 on the season, and extends her singles streak to four-straight. However, the Cougars quickly knotted the score with wins from the Nos. 2 and 3 positions after USF netters
Thyra Taune and
Sofia Holmberg dropped close contests.
Marina Nikolic, a junior from Mountain View, Calif., took a hard-fought point from Desiree Tran from the No. 4 position, winning 7-6 (9-7), 7-5 to put USF back on top. The Dons dropped the next two points as BYU took the come-from-behind win.
In the final match of the day, freshman Savannah Ware opened with a first-set victory over USF's
Brooke Irish. But the Don battled back to take the second with a 6-0 score and force the tiebreaker. BYU's Ware got down 5-2 before gutting out the 7-5 third-set win to clinch for the Cougars.
With the victory, BYU evens its season record at 4-4 (1-0 WCC), while USF moves to 8-4 (0-2 WCC).
The Dons will look to regroup Monday with a pair of matches against non-conference opponents, starting a four-match homestand. USF will host Youngstown State and Southern Utah at Golden Gate Park, with action against the Penguins slated to start at 11:30 a.m.
