WCC Championships Central Follow USF Men's Tennis: Facebook | TwitterSAN DIEGO, Calif. – The San Francisco men's tennis team upended No. 5-seeded Loyola Marymount 4-1 to open play at the West Coast Conference Championships at Barnes Tennis Center Wednesday morning.
The Dons, seeded eighth in the tournament bracket, avenged March 22's 5-2 loss at the hands of the Lions in resounding fashion. USF opened the day with the doubles point and set the tone for things to come.
"This was the best match of the season by far," head coach
Pablo Pires de Almeida said. "Everyone really stepped up their belief in each other and supported each other with such intensity. Now we can believe and go into tomorrow's match with lots of confidence. Every match is a battle down here but we are up for the challenge!"
After falling behind in doubles play, the top tandem of
Bernardo Saraiva and
Nils Skajaa downed Sebastian Bustamante and Todd Volmari, 8-6. The win was the seventh-straight for the USF duo. Coming down to the No. 3 pairings,
Germain Bahri and
Thomas Takemoto recorded a 8-7(7) come-from-behind win to secure the point for USF.
As singles action commenced, Saraiva gave USF its second point of the day after downing David Doehring, 7-5, 6-2. Saraiva, a junior from Lisbon, Portugal, recorded his sixth-straight victory to improve his spring record to 19-7, all from the No. 1 position.
On court six, Bahri took down Othar Kordsachia, 6-4, 6-0, to push Loyola Marymount to the brink, and redshirt junior
James Tallman clinched the match after defeating Sebastian Bustamante, 6-3, 6-1.
The Dons improve to 15-13 on the year and advance to Thursday's championship quarterfinal round. USF will face fourth-seeded Santa Clara, ranked No. 59 by ITA Tennis. First serve from the Barnes Tennis Center is slated for 9 a.m.
