SAN FRANCISCO -- Sophomore guard Avry Holmes has announced his intention to transfer from USF in order to pursue his basketball and academic career at another school beginning next fall.

Holmes, a native of Salem, Ore., started all 33 games for the Dons this past season and averaged 12.5 points and 2.3 rebounds a game while shooting 43.8 percent from the field. He ranked eighth in the West Coast Conference in three-point percentage at 41.9 percent.

In 62 career games, Holmes averaged 9.8 points, 1.9 rebounds and shot 43.9 percent (98-for-223) from three-point range.

"Avry has indicated to me he would like to continue his studies and basketball career at another school," said head coach Rex Walters. "Although I'm disappointed in his decision, we as a staff and team want him to find what he is looking for and wish him nothing but the best in the future.

"Avry was a big part of a good season for us this year and we appreciate his work in the classroom, in the community and on the court. Although this is a loss for the program, I am very excited about the 2014-15 season and feel our goal are still very attainable.

"All the best to Avry, is family and friends. I'm sure he'll do great things in the future and I feel the same way about our team and program."

"We're certainly disappointed whenever any student-athlete leaves the University before graduating," said USF Director of Athletics Scott Sidwell. "College basketball has become increasingly transient in nature and student-athletes leave programs for a variety of reasons, mostly for what they perceive to be better situations for their careers.

"The goal for us is to continue to improve our infrastructure to provide our student-athletes with everything they need to be successful on a high level."

The NCAA estimates about 40 percent of all Division I men's basketball players depart their initial school by the end of their sophomore season.
