WCC Championships Central Follow USF Men's Tennis: Facebook | TwitterSAN DIEGO – After an opening-round upset in the West Coast Conference Championships, the San Francisco men's tennis team couldn't repeat on the second day of the tournament, falling to No. 59 Santa Clara 4-0.
USF concludes its season with a 15-14 record, putting together back-to-back winning seasons on the Hilltop. The Dons, seeded eighth in the conference championship bracket, faced an uphill battle from the start against the No. 4-seeded Broncos.
USF opened the morning with a loss at No. 1 doubles before the No. 2 tandem of
James Tallman and
Timothy Tan came from behind to down Ashot Khacharyan and Mikheil Khmiadashvili, 8-7(4). Despite a tough battle, the final doubles court went the way of the Broncos and gave Santa Clara the first point of the match.
In singles action, the trio of matches in the middle of the lineup favored the Broncos, and the match was ceased with a score of 4-0. Though unfinished, USF's No. 1 player
Bernardo Saraiva took a 7-6(4) victory in his first set over John Lamble before play was stopped. Saraiva, a junior from Lisbon, Portugal, and first-team All-WCC performer, led the Dons with a record of 19-7 in the spring and a 25-11 overall mark.
The other two incomplete matches also opened with first-set wins for the Dons, with
Christian Brockstedt earning a 7-5 advantage from the No. 5 position and
Germain Bahri managing a 7-6(4) score in the opening set on court six.
Bahri, USF's lone senior, closed his collegiate career for the Dons with 39 total wins in singles action. Most recently, the native of Gosselies, Belgium, contributed with wins in both singles and doubles play in USF's upset of Loyola Marymount in the first round of the 2014 WCC Championships.
