Video highlightsSAN FRANCISCO – Facing a stout foe in 55th-ranked San Diego, the San Francisco men's tennis team fell to the Toreros 6-1 in Saturday's Senior Day match at the Cal Club.
Junior
Bernardo Saraiva proved to provide the bright spot for the Dons. He battled No. 49 Clarke Spinosa in a three-setter and came away with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 victory. The win was Saraiva's second over a ranked foe this spring as he improves his dual match tally to 14-7 on the season.
Timothy Tan, playing from the No. 6 position, also stretched his match to a third frame. The freshman from San Jose, Calif., won the first set over Andrew Raphaelson 6-2 before dropping the second 3-6. Falling just short in the tiebreaker, Raphaelson held on to win 7-6(5) despite the solid play from Tan.
San Diego quickly built a 1-0 lead after sweeping the doubles matches, and earned its first three points in singles play in straight-set fashion. Then, Saraiva bested Spinosa, San Diego's lone ranked individual in the day's showcase match.
USF moves to 9-12 on the season, while San Diego improves to 9-7 and sports an undefeated 4-0 record in West Coast Conference play.
"The guys are competing very well, and we are just in need of a little more confidence and hard work to turn the tide for us to get on a winning streak," head coach
Pablo Pires de Almeida said. "It will come, and the guys are ready!"
The Dons look to rebound Monday, as USF hosts Cal Poly in its final home match of the 2014 campaign. First serve from The Olympic Club is slated for 11 a.m.
