SAN FRANCISCO/STANFORD, Calif. – Multiple record-setting performances highlighted the San Francisco women's track and field team's weekend in at two Bay Area meets.
Running in the 5,000 meters at the Stanford Invitational, Elena Burkard raced to a school-record time of 16:05.84 as she finished seventh in her section. The sophomore from Baiersbronn, Germany, broke the previous USF best of teammate and fellow German Jana Soethout by nearly six seconds.
"We knew Elena was ready for a big run this weekend and she did not disappoint," head coach Helen Lehman-Winters said. "Her 16:05 and new school record shows how much she has improved in the last year. I know she has some more big things to come as the season progresses."
Another track and field record was toppled over the weekend, in the 4x100 meter relay. Sprinters Kamilah Davis, Asaundra Dalton, Lupe Medina and Eleni Fkiarasearned second in their section with a time of 48.42 at the Stanford Invitational as they broke their own previous school benchmark.
Kailey Ulland posted a personal best in the 3,000 meter steeplechase as she finished fifth at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival. Her first sub-11 minute time of 10:56.21 outpaced 26 fellow competitors at the meet. Each woman that ran the 100, 400 and 800 meters at the Stanford Invitational landed in the top 10 of their respective heats and events.
"We are pleased with how so many of our athletes stepped up this weekend," Lehman-Winters noted. "We had multiple personal bests with many others showing a ton of improvement. We walked away from this weekend with five NCAA qualifiers and look forward to picking up more later this month."
Up next, the Dons are next slated to compete at the Sun Angel Invitational in Phoenix, Ariz., Friday and Saturday.
