PORTLAND, Ore. – The San Francisco women's basketball team put on a clinic at the Chiles Center, downing Portland 79-44 Thursday night.
The Dons shot 55.2 percent from the floor, compared to Portland's 29.1 percent shooting. USF outrebounded the Pilots by an impressive 42 to 26 margin, the largest rebounding difference against a conference foe. Portland, the league's leading 3-point shooting team, managed just a 5-for-19 effort from long range.
"It was a great team win for us tonight, and the fact that everyone on our team scored was great for team building, confidence, momentum," head coach
Jennifer Azzi noted after the game. "I thought our defense was much improved compared to the last time we played against Portland. It's just a credit to our players. They played hard, they were there for each other, they were in help. It was the players playing hard and playing well together."
With the season sweep of the Pilots, USF moves to 14-9 on the season, and 5-7 in West Coast Conference play. Meanwhile, Portland slips to 4-18 (2-9 WCC). As each victory represents a new milestone in the
Jennifer Azzi era, USF hits the 14-win mark for just the second time in the last decade.
Taylor Proctor paced the Dons with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting and five rebounds in just 20 minutes on the court.
Taj Winston added 14 points and three steals, and every woman who entered the contest scored a basket in the game.
"I think the great thing about this team is they're a team from one to however many players that we have healthy," Azzi said. "They're very, very supportive of each other and you can see that. They really believe in each other and have each other's backs, so I think that's why they can all kind of come in with the kind of confidence that they did tonight."
The Dons set the tone from the outset, winning the opening tip for the 21st time of the season. On the first possession
Aundrea Gordon drained a 3-pointer from the left side of the arc. Then, Proctor swished a triple and the USF offense was off to the races. After a 10-0 run to start the game, the Dons grew the advantage to 22 points after Winston's steal and layup with 9:55 remaining in the first half.
"Pretty much all this week we've been talking about getting back to work, and this is exactly what we've been doing all week," Winston explained post game. "We've been practicing hard, we've been going at it all week and putting our heart on the floor in practices and we just came out here and showed them what we've been doing all week."
USF continued to pour on the points, and A layup from Proctor with 3:59 to play in the half set the score at 40-14. At that moment, Proctor alone was outscoring the Pacific offense, 15-14. USF redshirt freshman
Kalyn Simon capped the half with her first career 3-pointer and the Dons were up 45-24. The 21-point halftime margin tied USF's largest lead at the break on the season.
The second half was much of the same, opening with a 13-3 scoring spurt in the first five minutes of the period. The Dons rolled through the remainder of the game, highlighted by
Hashima Carothers' first career 3-pointer, and a nifty reverse layup by
Bryn Stark with 1:01 on the clock. USF went on to post the 79-44.
The Dons finished the night with season highs in points in the paint (44) and points off the bench (29), and USF scored 23 points off Portland's 17 turnovers.
Next up, USF heads to Gonzaga looking to upend the conference leaders. Saturday's first tip from the McCarthey Athletic Center is slated for 2 p.m.
"It's a great environment and I love it I tell our team every year to enjoy it," Azzi said. "They have great fans, they're classy, and they're a fantastic program. Gonzaga is a very, very tough team."
