
Burkard Shines in Season Debut

SAN FRANCISCO -- In her first meet of the 2015 season, junior Elena Burkard shined on Saturday, winning two events at the Johnny Mathis Invitational at San Francisco State University.
In the 800 meters, Burkard was able to fend off the competition to take first place with a time of 2:12.23. Teammates Daryl Phill placed fourth in 2:16.46, while Kelsey Nielsen finished ninth in 2:20.49.
Burkard, along with Phill and senior Kate Jamboretz, also highlighted the day by sweeping the top-3 spots in the 1,500 m.
In a close finish, Burkard edged out Jamboretz to win the race in a time of 4:24.00. Jamboretz placed second in 4:24.92.
Sophomore Daryl Phill, who finished second in the 1,500 m last week at the Aggie Open, narrowly fended off two runners from Chico State at the finish line to take third in 4:36.45. Nielsen finished eighth in 4:41.02, while teammate Ashley Moffett also secured a top-10 finish, placing ninth in 4:43.26. Jamboretz, Phill, Nielsen and Moffett each set personal bests in the 1,500 m.
Burkard wasn't the only Don to take home a first-place finish on Saturday.
Freshman Kenya Shakoor, who placed second in the triple jump at the Aggie Open, won the event with a distance of 11.38 m. Shakoor also placed ninth in the long jump, with a distance of 5.37 m, her longest jump of the season.
Asaundra Dalton was among the Dons sealing top-3 finishes on Saturday. Dalton placed third in the 100 m dash with a time of 12.35.
In the 400 m dash, freshman Skylar Fenton finished fifth in 1:00.71.
"All of women turned in season or personal bests today," said head coach Helen Lehman-Winters. "We are continuing to make progress and we are pleased with what we are seeing in practice and on the track."
The Dons will return to action on April 3, when they'll compete in the San Francisco State Distance Carnival and the Stanford Invitational.
