Bryan Clay Invitational
The Dons' track and field team continues its season this week in Southern California, where the squad will compete in the Mt. Sac Invitational and the Bryan Clay Invitational.
"This weekend will certainly provide a ton of competition, and we believe the athletes we have competing are prepared to rise to the challenge," said head coach Helen Lehman-Winters. "We have had some great training over the past couple weeks and things are really starting to come together. We are looking forward to a productive weekend of track and field down south."
On the men's side, freshman Adrian Shocks is among the Dons who will highlight the action at the Bryan Clay Invitational on Friday.
Shocks, in his first collegiate season, has dominated the competition in the triple jump. Already, Shocks has set a new school record of 15.24 meters in the event, which came during the Aggie Open in March, when he finished second. He has also placed first in the triple jump at two meets, including the Dons most recent meet -- the Stanford Invitational.
Shocks, along with Nile Norwood, will also compete in the long jump on Friday. Norwood enters the meet after finishing third in the long jump at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival on April 4.
Among runners from the men's team who will highlight the Mt. Sac Invitational will be 2014 NCAA Preliminary Championship qualifiers Jose Madera and Eric Causey.
Madera and Causey will compete in the 5,000 m. Madera last competed in the 5,000 m in February during the Husky Indoor Invitational, where he finished the race in 14:46.34.
Friday will mark Causey's third race of the season. Causey last competed in the Stanford Invitational, where he placed 17th in the 5,000 m with a time of 13:59.15, the fastest time posted by a Don in that event this season.
Freshman Mohamed Aziz will appear Thursday at the Mt. Sac Invitational, when he will compete in the 3,000 meter steeplechase for the second time this season. Aziz last competed in the 3,000 m steeplechase during the San Francisco State Distance Carnival where he finished fifth. He is currently the fastest frosh steeplechaser in program history.
On the women's side, Jana Soethout will be among the Dons to watch Friday at the Mt. Sac Invitational. Soethout, who reached the NCAA Track and Field National Championships in 2014, will compete in the 5,000m for the first time this season.
"(Soethout) set a school record in this event at Payton Jordan last year and has already demonstrated by her 10k run at Stanford that she is ahead of where she was last year at this time," Lehman-Winters said. "(She could possibly set a) school record, if the pace is right and she makes the right moves."
Elena Burkard, who has performed well in several meets this year, will compete Friday in the 1,500 m for the second time this season. Burked last competed in this event during the Johnny Mathis Invitational in March, where first finished first with a time of 4:24.00, the fastest time posted by a Don this season.
In the Bryan Clay Invitational, freshman Asaundra Dalton will highlight the sprints for the Dons. Dalton will compete in the 100 m and 200 m dash on Friday. Dalton enters this week's meet after posting her second fastest time of the season in the 100 m (12.25) during the Stanford Invitational.
Kenya Shakoor is also coming off a strong performance at the Stanford Invitational. Shakoor, who will compete in the triple jump, placed third in that event with a jump of 11.78, her best mark of the season.
