Dons Dominate In Quarterfinals Play

San Diego, Calif.- University of San Francisco's women's tennis team had shut out No. 6 seed Gonzaga 4-0 this afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the West Coast Conference Championships at the Barnes Tennis Center.

After clinching their match last week against Gonzaga 4-3, USF pulled out an impressive performance today that enabled them to advance in semifinals competition.

"Gonzaga was hungry to play us after our close match just a week ago," said head coach Hilary Somers. "They had studied and prepared for us and much as we did for them.  Our girls were calm and clear on their game plans and executed well today.  I'm really proud of them.  We are excited to play Portland tomorrow."

USF started the match off with No. 2 and 3 doubles, where they earned the Dons' first team point. Sofia Holmberg and Milica Hadzi-Tanovic served up an 8-5 win against Kylie Peek and Sissi Koehler.

At No. 2 doubles, Thyra Taune and Genevieve McCloskey took down Melanie Yates and Alex Bourguignon 8-5 confirming the Dons lead 1-0.

Taking the doubles victory momentum into singles play, all three of USF's match wins were completed in two quick sets. The recently awarded All-WCC First Team Singles recipient, Andrea Ka, was the first to step off the court as she defeated Gonzaga's top player Katie Edwards, 6-4, 7-5.

With the Dons ahead 2-0, McCloskey downed Yates 6-3, 6-1. Taune solidified the 4-0 victory as she served up a quick 6-2, 6-3 win against Samantha Polayes.

The Dons, seeded third in the tournament improve to a 13-9 on the year.  USF heads to semifinals play as they take on No. 2 seed Portland tomorrow at the Barnes Tennis Center at 10 a.m.

In March, USF came short against Portland 4-3. The Dons will compete Friday in the pursuit to upend the Pilots and earn a spot in the championship round.

The winner of the USF-Portland match will advance to face the winner of the No. 4 Saint Mary's/No. 5 BYU vs. No. 1 Pepperdine in Saturday's finals match.
