FULLERTON, Calif. - The USF men's soccer team suffered a 3-0 loss at Cal State Fullerton on Sunday afternoon at Titan Stadium. The Dons (2-4-0) put together a number of chances in the match, but weren't able to convert any into goals.
Davi Ramos led the Dons offensively with five shots on the day, including three on frame. In the 65th minute, Ramos nearly got the Dons on the board when he took a pass from the left wing, dribbled to the left side of the box and fired a low shot through a sliver of space that slipped through Fullerton keeper David Elias's hands, but was smothered before the Dons could get off a follow up shot.
Ramos had another good look on a loose ball from 25 yards out. Ramos delivered a strong left-footed strike toward the right post that Elias had to stop with a full-extension dive.
Cal State Fullerton (3-2-0) got on the board in the 14th minute when Diego Sanchez scored the first of his two goals on the day on a volley from Nicolo D'Amato, putting the Titans up 1-0.
USF almost tied things up when they had their best chance of the match in the final seconds of the first half as Manny Padilla sent a long pass across the pitch that Jesus Del Toro corralled and delivered the firm one-timer headed for the near post, but it was deflected away by Elias, keeping the score at 1-0 in favor of Fullerton heading into halftime.
Early in the second half, the Titans were the beneficiaries of a lucky bounce on what turned out to be an own-goal after a free kick from the left wing into traffic in the box glanced off a USF defender's head backwards into the Dons' net, giving the Titans a 2-0 lead in the 50th minute. D'Amato was credited with the goal on the play.
Soon after, Sanchez struck again in the 57th minute when Ross McPhie delivered a through ball to Sanchez on the right edge of the box where Sanchez was able to punch the one-timer to the far post past Glasnovic to put Fullerton up 3-0.
Despite taking the loss in goal, Glasnovic had some great saves in the match, including one early in the second half where McPhie found himself staring right at Glasnovic from only about 10 yards out on the left wing, but McPhie's firm shot was deflected away by Glasnovic for one of his three saves on the day.
Elias registered five saves of his own for Fullerton. The Titans held a 16-12 overall advantage in shots, but the Dons outshot the Titans 7-6 in the second frame. Cal State Fullerton also held a slight edge in corner kicks, 4-3.
Bryce Kaminski contributed to the Dons' offensive attack with three shots, one of which was on goal.
USF looks to bounce back when they travel down to Palo Alto to take on No. 13 Stanford at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 18.
