SAN FRANCISCO - The USF men's soccer team suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat on Thursday evening at Negoesco Stadium as the visiting CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners scored a golden goal in the 92nd minute to earn the nonconference victory.
Despite getting out to an early lead with Sean Bowman's goal in the 44th minute, the Dons (2-7-0) were unable to take advantage of chances later in the contest as CSU Bakersfield (2-2-2) evened it in the 61st minute before posting the game winner in the early minutes of the first overtime frame.
The Dons came out with a game plan centered around quality possessions as they methodically worked the ball around the pitch for much of the first half. However, USF's goal ended up coming not on a well-placed pass but rather on a three-on-two counter attack led by Bowman, who had checked in just minutes earlier, dribbling up the middle of the pitch. Bowman dished it to Kevin De La Torre who was flanking Bowman on the right wing, and De La Torre fired off a shot from inside the box that was blocked and batted around in front of the goal before Bowman was able to muscle it through a sea of flailing legs just enough for the ball to trickle inside the far post for his second goal of the season.
The Dons' defense was put to work in a match that saw USF get outshot 14-6, but the back line turned in a number of stops that kept the contest competitive. In the 34th minute, CSUB had a two-on-one advantage with USF's Christian De Luna being the lone buffer after a Don turnover near midfield, but Hunter Ashworth swooped in to support De Luna and shut down the chance.
The Roadrunners were able to take advantage of an accidental hand ball in the box by Kevin Gould to score the equalizer in the 61st minute. Julian Zamora's penalty kick attempt was a low, hard shot inside the right post to knot it up at 1-1.
Gould turned in a solid defensive effort later on in the 81st minute when CSUB sent in a cross from the left wing that was just out of USF keeper Andre Glasnovic's reach, leaving Zamora with one man to beat in front of an empty net with Glasnovic out of position, but Gould matched up with Zamora and knocked the ball away to preserve the tie.
Four minutes later, Glasnovic turned in the most acrobatic of his three saves on the night when he had a full extension dive to his right to swat away a shot by Stephen Church in traffic following a Bakersfield corner kick, helping to force overtime during a stretch when CSUB was putting a lot of pressure on the USF defense.
However, just two minutes into the overtime period, Christian Duarte followed up a long pass from Adam Arana and used the mismatch in front of the goal to his favor to score the game winner as he slipped his shot into the far post past Glasnovic, who was all alone in goal.
For much of the second half, USF was able to push the ball into the attacking third, but were unable to consistently penetrate the Bakersfield back line.
David Garrett had a shot on goal for the Dons, as the rest of their shots were scattered among five different players with one apiece.
USF returns to the pitch on Sunday when they travel to UC Davis for a 1 p.m. tilt versus the Aggies.
