MORAGA, Calif. – The San Francisco men's soccer team dueled with Bay Area rival Saint Mary's on Sunday afternoon, with the Gaels edging out the 1-0 victory.
USF and Saint Mary's now sport identical conference records with each squad standing at 2-2 in league play. The Dons now stand at 6-7-0 on the season, while the Gaels have an overall mark of 6-7-3.
The lone goal in the defensive battle came in the 20th minute when Ever De La Torre crossed to Joseph Restani inside the box. Restani's boot to the far corner went over USF's
Ryan Buckingham's head for the score.
The Dons responded with a flurry of four shots in an eight minute span in the first period, with
Aaron Lombardi and
David Garrett being thwarted by Saint Mary's goalkeeper Andrew Konstantino. The Gaels keeper notched another save after Santiago Degiuseppe's attempt in the 34th minute came up short.
In the second frame, USF's best chance to knot the game came in the 51st minute of action.
Davi Ramos served up a header that hit the crossbar and Garrett's rebound attempt was saved to again turn back the Dons offensive attack.
The Gaels finished with the 15-11 shots advantage, and a 9-6 edge in shots on goal. Garrett finished with two shots on goal for USF to lead the charge, with Josh Smith,
Sean Bowman, Digiuseppe and Lombardi finishing with one shot on goal apiece.
USF stays close to home for their next match, traveling to Stockton to take on Pacific on Saturday at 7 p.m.
