SAN FRANCISCO – Junior
Chase Foster scored a career-high 20 points while
Jordan Ratinho added 16 and
Charles Minlend chipped in 10 to lead USF to a 82-63 victory over visiting Lamar Friday night in the Sobrato Center.
Â
The win improves USF's record to 6-1 overall, marking the Dons' best seven-game start since the 1999-2000 season, when the team burst out of the gates with a 12-1 record. Lamar drops to 4-3 on the season.
Â
USF shot 50 percent from the field, marking the fifth consecutive game the Dons have made at least half of their shots from the floor. The Dons also outrebounded the Cardinals, 37-27 with sophomore
Matt McCarthy pulling down a game-high nine boards.
Â
The victory came in nearly wire-to-wire fashion, as Lamar's only lead in the game came after the Cardinals scored the first two points of the evening. The Dons lead was just six points at the break, 36-30 and the Cardinal crept to within four points after Colton Weisbrod scored the opening points of the second period.
Â
The Dons then delivered an early second half knockout punch by scoring the next 14 points to open a 50-32 lead with 16:13 remaining. Foster keyed the run by scoring nine of his 20 points in a 2:47 stretch. USF led by as many as 24 points with :50 left before winning by the final 82-63 count.
Â
"I was really pleased with the way we handled their pressure," said USF head coach
Kyle Smith. "They are a scrappy team that can cause some problems. We made nine first half turnovers but just two in the second half and we went on a nice run after a halftime that gave us some breathing room."
Â
Foster made 8-of-13 shots from the floor, including 3-of-6 from three-point range. Ratinho enjoyed another fine shooting night off the bench, making 6-of-10 shots from the field, including three long balls.
Â
"Chase has been good for us all year – that's why he earned a starting spot," said Smith. "He really earned his spot with his rebounding but he is a real good offensive player. We call him our blond Manu (Ginobili) because he can really drive it and make plays."
Â
Ratinho has now scored in double figures in five consecutive games to boost his scoring average to 11.2 points a game. "Jordan is our glue guy," said Smith. "He is very talented and makes good decisions on both ends of the court."
Â
"We're starting to settle in and get some real good chemistry on the court," said Smith. "We're getting more balanced. Tonight it was Chase, on a lot of nights it will be Ronnie (Boyce) or maybe Charles or Jordan. To be a complete team we'll need to compete on the defensive end of the floor and rebound the ball consistently."
Â
The Dons will return to action on Tuesday night when they meet San Francisco State at Kezar Pavilion beginning at 8:00 p.m. It will be USF's first game in the venerable facility since 1958. The game will be preceded by the women's game between USF and San Jose State at 6:00 p.m.
Â
To celebrate the return to their original home, the Dons will be wearing throwback jerseys from that era and both teams will also wear 1950 length shorts. Concession items such as hot dogs, soda and popcorn will be offered at the 1950's friendly price of 50 cents and fans will be treated to a sock hop dance contest at halftime.
Â
All fans are encouraged to dress in 1950's attire.
Â
USF will pay tribute to the "Legends of Kezar" by honoring members of its teams which made three consecutive Final Four appearances from 1955-57. Members of those teams will be on hand take photos with fans and the NCAA Championship trophies prior to the start of the men's game.
