Seilund's Career Night Boosts Dons to Win

Video Highlights
SAN FRANCISCO – In its first-ever game at historic Kezar Pavilion, the San Francisco women earned a 79-71 victory over San Jose State on Tuesday evening's soiree on Stanyan Street.

The Dons were powered by a career-high evening for junior Anna Seilund, pouring in 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting with four triples on the night. This marks the best outing for the native of Copenhagen, Denmark, since a 17-point effort on Feb. 26, 2015 when she dropped in 17 points at Saint Mary's during her freshman season.

"I heard about a lot of history in this gym, and I'm really proud that we could keep on winning in this gym," Seilund said after the game of the home of three USF national champion men's squads in the 40's and 50's.

USF enjoyed hot shooting in the early stages of the contest while the Spartans could not find a rhythm on the historic court. USF hit 6 of its first 11 from the floor to race out to the 13-2 advantage after a triple from Seilund, with Claudia Price scoring eight early points to get the Dons going offensively.

By the half, the Dons had extended to an 18-point lead after Seilund scored the final five points of the period to make it 42-24 in favor of USF. After the break, Price scooped up an offensive rebound and tipped in the putback to stretch the advantage to 20, USF's largest of the night.

San Jose State did their best to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Dons 30-19 in the final 10 minutes of play. The Spartans got the lead to nine after Myzhanique Ladd converted on the layup and ensuing free throw with 5:09 on the clock. San Jose State's Paris Baird edged the Spartans even closer after her 3-pointed found the bottom of the net with 1:09 remaining to set the score at 74-69.

"San Jose State is a really fast team and they like to press a lot so keeping that ball and not turning it over was definitely a key for this game," remarked Seilund on the 14 team turnovers on the night. "I think it's been a pattern for our team to come out really strong, but to maintain that lead is something that we really have to work on. Our energy level falls and we can't do that. Every second of the game matters and there's no time to relax. When you do relax for just a minute the teams are right back after you."

Along with Seilund's banner night, Rachel Howard (13 points), Price (12) and Michaela Rakova (11) all found themselves in double figure scoring, as USF shot 41 percent from the floor. Hashima Carothers led the way crashing the glass, scooping up game highs of 11 rebounds and four assists. San Jose State's Dezz Ramos finished as the leading scorer on the night, with 28 points in the losing effort.

Now, the Dons take a break from the action for finals week on the Hilltop. USF hits the hardwood next on Dec. 17, as the squad travels to San Luis Obispo to face off with Cal Poly.

"We've got to prepare and keep working as a team," added Seilund as she looks ahead to the hiatus.
