SAN FRANCISCO -- USF's women's tennis team clinched a spot in next week's WCC Championships with a 4-1 victory over Loyola Marymount this afternoon at the Broadway Tennis Center in a match that was moved indoors due to inclement weather in the Bay Area.
The win improves USF's record to 6-11 overall and 4-4 in the WCC. Coupled with BYU's loss earlier in the day to Saint Mary's, the Dons are assured of a top-six finish in the conference standings and a trip to next week's WCC Championships in Claremont.
?
USF secured the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and 2 positions and then captured three of the four completed singles contests to win the match, 4-1.
?
The team of Hanna Borjeson and
Shanna Dos Santos struck first in the doubles with a win on court 2 over Anna Remeka and Andrea Crespo, 6-3. The Dons top tandem of
Andrea Ka and
Thyra Taune then provided the clincher with a 6-3 win over Jessica Perez and Elvira Juravliova.
?
USF increased its lead to 2-0 in the match when Borjeson downed Ellie Grossman, 6-3, 6-2 on court six to start singles play. The Lions crept back into the match with a win on court No. 3 as Kristine Kouyoumijia downed Gen McCloskey, 6-1, 6-3.
?
Taune posted a 6-3, 6-4 win over Anna Crespo on court No. 2 to give the Dons a 3-1 advantage. Dos Santos then provided the clinching point with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Tatijian Sheikhan.
?
USF will close out its regular season tomorrow against first place Pepperdine, which sits atop the conference standings with a 8-0 mark. First serve is at 12 noon at the Cal Club.
