MSOC | Two Late Goals are the Difference for Dons over Gonzaga

THE RUNDOWN

SPOKANE, Wash. – A goalless first half between the University of San Francisco and Gonzaga's men's soccer team led to an exciting goal-filled second half, which ended 3-1 to the Dons and a second consecutive win for the team.

USF (5-8-0, 2-1-0 WCC) were first to get on the score sheet when Manny Padilla whipped in a beautiful cross into the box, which was headed home by Bryce Kaminski for his fourth of the season, making it 1-0 USF. Four minutes later, Gonzaga equalized from a low shot from just outside the box by Sam Olson, which beat Ruben Stuiver.

With less than eight minutes to go in the second half, Leon Schwarzer drove down the right wing and laid off a pass to Aaron Lombardi in the middle of the 18-yard box and the senior played a lead pass to the foot of Bowman who rocketed into the back of the net to make 2-1 to USF. Just seven minutes later, Tawwab Emiola gave the Dons a little breathing room when he made it 3-1 after latching onto a loose ball in the Zags' half and beat a retreating keeper for his first goal of the season.

COACHES QUOTE

USF head coach Eddie Soto

On the team rebounding from the equalizer:

"I'm proud of the grit the guys showed tonight. We controlled the entire match and to give away the goal we did when up 1-0 was not great, but I was proud to see them regroup and create two fantastic goals.

On the upcoming match against Portland:

"Portland is the leader in our conference so if we want a chance to compete for the WCC crown we have to be ready to play well against the defending champs on Sunday."

STATS OF THE GAME
  • In a tightly contested contest, the Dons outshot Gonzaga 10-8. Both teams shared an equal amount of shots in the first and second half.
  • An intense conference game led to a chippy affair, with USF committing 12 fouls, while the Zags committed 10.
  • Emiola's insurance goal was his first of the season, and his first as a Don.
NEXT UP
