PROVO, Utah – The San Francisco men's tennis team opened West Coast Conference play on Saturday, dropping its match against the Cougars by a final score of 4-2 at the BYU Indoor Tennis Courts.
USF's two points came from the top half of the lineup, both in straight sets. No. 1
Johan Joenhagen picked up the 6-1, 6-3 victory over Keaton Cullimore. Freshman
Mert Zincirli knocked off Jeremy Bourgeois 6-3, 7-6(3) on court 3 to remain undefeated in the spring.
The duo also turned in a solid performance as a tandem, holding the lead in their match against Bourgeois and Jacob Sullivan before the Cougars secured the doubles point and play was stopped on court 1.
"We had great performances by Johan and Mert being up 5-3, 30-0 in dubs and then both of them winning in straight sets in singles," noted USF head coach
Pablo Pires de Almeida. "Unfortunately, our guys got outworked by BYU. Hats off to their players for playing smarter as a team."
With the victory over the Dons, BYU head coach Brad Pearce earned his 204th career win, passing his father, Wayne, as the all-time winningest coach in BYU men's tennis history.
Next up for USF, the squad heads to Pebble Beach, Calif., to face off against UC Santa Barbara and Grand Canyon on Saturday, with matches beginning at 10 a.m.
