STOCKTON, Calif. – In their second meeting in the span of a week, the Pacific Tigers nipped the San Francisco men's tennis team by a score of 4-3 on Saturday at the Eve Zimmerman Tennis Courts.
Last week's match in the opening round of the Pacific Mountain Invitational went heavily in favor of the Tigers, who played to the 4-1 decision. Today, USF head coach
Pablo Pires de Almeida mixed up the lineup and edged the Dons ever so closer to knocking off its West Coast Conference competitor.
The day began with Pacific taking the doubles point from the Dons to score first in the match. Playing at No. 2,
Johan Joenhagen knotted the score with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Pacific's Tadiwa Chinamo, before the Tigers again snuck out to the lead with the win on Court 1.
The see-saw battle was on, as USF's
Woravin Kumthonkittikul downed Bernardo Oliveira 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 6 position. The Tigers took the point at No. 5, and
Oliver Poysti knotted the score at three apiece with a straight-set victory against Akram El Sallaly on Court 4.
With the match on the line,
Ryan Marker dropped the first set to Alex Giannini from the No. 3 position in the lineup, but rebounded with the 6-2 score in the second to force the only third set of the day. Giannini got the better of Marker in the final frame to turn the Dons away, 4-3.
USF is still seeking its first conference win, falling to 0-2, while Pacific stands at 1-0 in WCC action.
Next, the Dons return home for their first match at the California Tennis Club in six weeks, hosting Yale on Friday at 1 p.m.
