MONTEREY, Calif. – The USF beach volleyball team had a busy Friday competing in three matches at the Monterey Invitational at the Monterey Beach House. USF lost all three contests but saw their No. 3 tandem of Carly Lowry and Dane Miller claim their first win of the year over Portland's Emma Scanlon and Morgan Robinson to highlight the day.
 
The Dons started the day with a 5-0 loss to San Jose State in the two teams' second meeting of the spring. USF co-head coaches Simone Ortega and Vicki Brown tweaked the lineups a bit, putting Nora Buvarp Lavik and Emily Reed in the No. 1 slot where they battled but ultimately fell in a pair of 21-19 set losses to the Spartans' Lyndi Scholl and Allison Meehan.
 
Camille Araujo and Marjolijn Oskam, another duo playing together for the first time this spring, also put together a strong outing, but fell at No. 2, 21-19, 21-18.
 
In addition to Levinson and Ashman's win against Portland in the Dons' second match of the day, Buvarp Lavik and Reed again played well, but came up just short in a 22-20, 20-17 defeat. Likewise, Trish Koutsoukos and Montana Green competed through three sets in a 15-21, 21-16, 21-6 loss at No. 5.
 
The final match of the day pitted USF against No. 3 UCLA, as the Bruins came away with the victory. Oskam and Araujo put together a competitive first set at No. 2, but were unable to pull out the win over the Bruins' Elise Zappia and Torrey Van Winden.  
 
The Dons head across the Bay Bridge to take on Saint Mary's at Moraga Commons Park at 3 p.m. on Thursday.
