SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- The USF beach volleyball team opened the 2017 slate with a 5-0 loss to San Jose State on Saturday afternoon at Main Beach in Santa Cruz. The Dons (0-1) posted an individual set win by
Emily Reed and
Carly Lowry at No. 2, but ultimately fell in the best-of-three match, while also dropping decisions at Nos. 1, 3, 4 and 5.
"We are extremely proud of this young group for the many strides they made in their first tournament as a beach team," co-head coach
Simone Ortega said after the match, "and for most, their first beach competition ever. Each pair is growing in their abilities both mentally and physically. They are learning to trust one another and to play as a unit."
This year's virtually brand new beach squad returns to action at the Sacramento State Invitational on Saturday where they will meet Sac State at 10 a.m. at Livermore Community Park, followed by a 1 p.m. match against Boise State.
